I like the growth mindset & social learning theory. The teacher & the student guide each other through academic challenges that strengthen resilience when approaching difficult tasks.

Students can be resentful toward tutoring. I've always approached the situation as conversation, so there will be an ebb & flow. First, I try to find out what & how they understand the subject matter. Secondly, I expand about my understanding & encourage they ask questions while showing them that I'm taking notes about our conversation. This is my opportunity to talk about note-taking to be support learning. Last, but not least, I demonstrate how those notes support our next session by opening up their notebook that I carry & use it to guide the next conversation.

Subject Expertise

My mission

I strive to increase the student's understanding about the subject and how it is used in real life. Practical usage has sometimes led to more critical thinking & expanding previous knowledge.

My Story

I was born in Memphis, TN & moved to Denver, CO when I was 12. After HS graduation, I attended college using an athletic training scholarship which matched the Administration part of my degree. I chose graduate school because I could seem to find a job after my summer internship. In graduate school, I met my former husband & father of my only daughter. I was recruited in graduate school to work as a health educator in the county health department in Louisville, KY. I married & continued to serve the community which was quite nice! Sept. 11, 2001, everything changed! My active duty US Army husband was assigned to a base in Hinesville, GA & I received the communiques that certified my military spouse status which packed up our belongings on a transfer truck bound for the next base. In Hinesville, I became certified in special education (SpEd) & taught special all levels of SpEd students by helping their families with education plans & strategies that could match their needs Our daughter was born in Savannah, GA not far from the base. Six months after her birth, we moved to Germany. In 2005, we moved to Upper Marlboro, MD. We separated in 2010. My daughter & I moved to Denver, CO in 2013 and New Year's Eve 2023, we moved to the Austin, TX metro area.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

Gifted students can be frequent flyers so I kept 'Tricky' riddles & puzzles directly related to the curriculum content. I also demonstrated real life uses of the learning content.

I've used multiple strategies: brain breaks, fidgets, group projects, VIP seating, etc.

I have worked with the entire Autistic spectrum. both self contained & those that push into traditional classrooms

I've taught dyslexic students how to use: voice recorders, text chunks, using alternative colors on tech screens, & different color composition books for class notes.
