Teaching Tolerance / Learning for Justice

Recommended Ages

Aimed at K–12 classrooms and youth programs, plus the adults who teach and care for them.

Teaching Tolerance, now known as Learning for Justice, is a long-standing project of the Southern Poverty Law Center that provides free classroom resources on anti-bias education, civil rights history, and social justice. For years, its magazine, film kits, and lesson plans helped teachers bring conversations about identity, diversity, and equity into K–12 classrooms. Many educators and homeschoolers still seek out older “Teaching Tolerance” labeled materials, which remain available and relevant. The focus is on building empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of shared responsibility across lines of difference. Because the perspective is explicitly anti-racist and equity-driven, it may not match all communities’ framing, but for many it’s a central resource. Pair it with current “Learning for Justice” content for updated language and examples.

All teaching materials and articles are free to access online.
