Nature-Based, Creative, Secular Home Education
Our approach to parenting and homeschooling is largely inspired by our love of nature, literature, and the arts. Charlotte Mason’s teachings and the Waldorf philosophy had a huge impact me as a mom, and a former kindergarten teacher, and I wanted to give my daughters the best possible start I could, filled with delight, wonder, and play.

At Blossom and Root, our resources are Charlotte Mason and Waldorf-inspired. While we do not follow a purist approach to either philosophy, their influences are threaded throughout our curricula (in a fully secular way.) For this reason, it is helpful and important to familiarize yourself with both before determining whether or not our resources will be a good fit for you and your family.

Blossom and Root is inspired by both Charlotte Mason and Waldorf philosophies

We highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the Charlotte Mason approach to language arts, especially the practices of narration, copywork, and dictation, as these are the foundational practices for Blossom and Root in Levels 0 and up. These practices look quite different from the language arts approach you’ll find in most schools today. If you feel your child needs more support with writing, grammar, and spelling, you can always supplement our curricula with other resources.

Our mission

At Blossom and Root, we believe that curriculum is meant to support and encourage both parent and child in their educational journey. We are committed to creating high-quality, creative, secular homeschool curriculum and resources that empower the parent educator and inspire the young learner.

Our story

I’m Kristina, and I’m the mama of Blake and Brice. I started Blossom & Root in 2015 to share our home education journey with other nature-based homeschooling families. Soon after I started blogging, I began developing our secular, hands-on, creative, and adaptable curriculum. We now offer preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first through sixth grades, U.S. history, and Book Seeds (STEM-centered, nature-based mini-unit studies.) As a former kindergarten teacher, elementary tutor, arts programming director and educator, ECE teacher, and ECE assistant director, I am passionate about providing secular homeschooling materials that honor creativity, make space for curiosity, and center nature around us and within us.

FAQ: Additional Details about Blossom and Root Third Grade (Full Bundle)

Blossom & Root Level 3 works through a structured but flexible weekly rhythm delivered via downloadable PDFs, offering 36 weeks of secular, hands-on, Charlotte Mason–inspired learning across language arts, science, geography, nature study, art, and music. Each week, parents spend about 30–45 minutes prepping by printing pages, gathering basic supplies, and sourcing books from the library. Daily lessons (1.5–2 hours per day, 4–5 days per week) include read-alouds from rich literature selections, narration, journaling, copywork, hands-on science tied to themes like the animal kingdom or prehistoric life, and creative art and nature projects. Designed for kids ages 8–11, the program emphasizes creativity, curiosity, and connection with minimal screen time or busywork, making it ideal for families who value a whole-child, nature- and art-based approach to third grade learning.

Parents who need a secular curriculum for their child (recommended for ages 8 - 11.)

Parents who want their child’s year to be filled with exposure to the arts, nature, science, and quality children’s literature

Parents who need a curriculum that builds academic foundations in a developmentally appropriate way and moves at their child’s own unique pace

Busy parents who need a program with minimal prep time each week (about half an hour)

Parents on a budget that cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a boxed curriculum package

Parents who want their child’s homeschooling experience to be beautiful, rich, and full of delight

Parents with hands-on learners

Parents who need a curriculum that includes Bible study or a religious perspective

Parents who want a curriculum that their child can do completely independently (Our curriculum requires 1.5 to 2 hours a day, 4 to 5 days a week, of focused time together)

Parents who prefer workbooks to hands-on activities

Parents who want an online school experience for their child

Parents who need an academic program for their child that mirrors what is being taught in brick-and-mortar schools

Parents who need every supply, book, and material for their year included in their purchase (Our curriculum is designed to use a few basic art supplies, typical household items, and many books that can be found at a library or for purchase used)

Your child should be reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like "map" and "cat," CVCe words like "tape" and "poke," short words with beginning and ending blends (like "sheep" and "felt"), and short words with common suffixes (like "careless" and "joyful") with no assistance. If your child needs more support in this area at this time, we highly recommend supplementing with a full, comprehensive phonics curriculum like All About Reading so that they can get additional reading support while continuing to explore and enjoy the rich literature and hands-on activities in our language arts curriculum.

Parents play an active and central role in Blossom & Root Level 3 by guiding daily lessons, reading aloud from the selected literature, asking discussion and narration questions, helping with hands-on science and art projects, and supporting journaling and copywork activities. They also choose and gather books (often from the library), prepare weekly materials, and adapt the pacing and depth of each subject to their child’s needs. While the curriculum is designed to be low-prep and open-and-go, it relies on consistent caregiver engagement to bring the stories, nature studies, and creative projects to life, making it a shared, relationship-centered learning experience.

Our language arts curriculum is inspired by many Charlotte Mason principles. One of these is the belief in a gentle academic approach to the early elementary years. The emphasis in this curriculum is on reading and enjoying stories together, processing and retelling the stories, creative expression inspired by the ideas and events of the stories, and a gentle approach to reading foundations. It is designed to be flexible, and lessons are meant to be short and concentrated.

That being said, every homeschooling family has different goals, needs, and requirements. Because of the gentle and adaptable nature of our curriculum, it is easy to add supplemental material as needed. You may want to (or be required to) add materials to this curriculum, and that is completely fine.

Math is not included in Levels 1 and up. You will need to add a math curriculum of your choosing. Some favorite options with Blossom and Root families include Math with Confidence, Wild Math, Beast Academy, and Right Start Math. See our "resources" page for more details on these recommendations.
