My approach to teaching is hopefully one of flexibility.; one that is demonstrator/teacher led with involvement. I enjoy structuring lessons and observing students as they learn.

I have a master's degree from AIU online and I have a bachelor's degree from the university of North Texas.
I am also a certified dyslexia specialist for 3 years. For the last 2 years I was a Substitute Teacher for the company of KOKUA.

I have previously tutored 4 students in a one on one setting .
Their ages ranged from five years to years. These students were very hard workers that were excited about learning. 2 of the students were tutored this past summer. The other 2 were tutored around my first year of teaching.

My mission

My mission is to encourage my student/s in the mastery of any subject so that he or she feels competent in his or her understanding of the materials. I will strive to build a a strong foundation in pedagogy and I will try to understand the diverse learning styles as I become more proficient in one-on-one student engagement and developing effective lesson plans.

My Story

My story is one of Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas with 3 sisters and one brother. I now reside in the southwest side of town which is called "Edgecliff". As an elementary and middle school student, there were very few challenges, however, " in Second grade I was diagnosed with "appendicitis" and I missed quite a few days in school. with the help of teachers, I was able to make up quite a bit of that missed time. (thankfully)
I have had many health challenges due to contracting Pneumonia during my teaching career, which caused me to miss several days of teaching, however i had the most understanding administrative staff, parents and students who encouraged my getting
well so I could get back to doing what i loved, which was teaching.
I came through the Alternative Certification program as a teacher and once I completed that certification I began teaching at a school of which I taught for 19 years. I retired from Teaching in 2019. As a retired teacher, I spent 2 years regretting retirement and feeling guilty that I had nothing to fulfill my days. I really missed being with my students, so I began to substitute teaching for about a year. Substitute teaching is a somewhat "different" and eye-opening experience. At any rate; now that I'm retired, I am excited to still be able to teach as well as provide individualized support, filling knowledge gaps and improving academic performance with each student as a safe, personalized environment. The one-on-one attention gives students at different paces to understand concepts better, and build essential learning skills.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

To approach cultural diversity I would have to cultivate self awareness by understanding my own biases and cultural values.

I have taught students with dyslexia for three years and these students were both highly intellectual as well as creative. They were made to feel like they were low performing and not capable of being good readers and their self-esteem was lowered. However; after tutoring with myself daily, and practicing with accelerated reading and scoring highly on each test and being rewarded for each highly scored test; opinions were changed concerning them.

In my brief term of working with gifted students, my main goal was to provide a combination of differentiated instruction, enrichment opportunities, and Social emotional support to challenge their intellect and personal growth.

I had a few profoundly gifted students for which I provided individualized acceleration, enrichment, and extension activities to match their advanced cognitive abilities.

My Granddaughter has downsyndrome and she has also been diagnosed with autism. She is nonverbal also. She is somewhat shielded from others. Since she lives in Houston,so I am not able to visit with her as often as I would like.

I have no experience with students who have autism; however I do have a grandchild with special needs and autism .

My students ranged from the grades of Kindergarten thru 5th grade and were very intelligent as well as gifted. They were mostly taught with audiobooks and the books were also read by myself, they did very little writing, but used the keyboard to do any writing also instructions had to be broken down into smaller step by step tasks. We offered continuous support with visual aids .technology, offering of choices, and partnering with parents as a way of building confidence for each dyslexic student.

I have not yet worked with sensory processing challenged students.
