I enjoy working in a collaborative atmosphere where I do interactive questioning and prompting to understand what the student understands. Then using that information I am able to weave together strategies that help the student gain an understanding of the material. In addition, I support the student by helping them learn how they learn and providing explicit instructions during our session.

I have been a teacher for over forty years. I got my B.A. from the University of Mary Washington and took courses at George Mason University and University of Virginia. I have a unique background because my job had me working with all levels of students so I have worked with LD, ED, ADHD, Executive Functioning Deficits. In contrast, I have also supported K-12 students in reading, writing, math, and science. I have taught AP, IB and have done college level tutoring out of Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason graduate students.

I have privately tutored for all ages K-12 for over forty years and have supported their different learning styles. I have provided differentiated instruction, based on need and provided various study strategies to support students who were struggling academically.

My mission

I love to learn new things and I love to work with students. I especially enjoy students who challenge me academically. I also loved coaching field hockey and teaching the girls how to play on the Junior Varsity Team.

My Story

I was born and raised in northern Virginia. My father was a teacher and a coach and my mother was a tennis pro and coach. I was the oldest of three children. My brother had severe learning disabilities so my ADHD was overlooked. I struggled to learn and at times I was put in the remedial classes and then other times I was put in the advanced classes. I guess you could call me 2e. Even though my father was a teacher, and a coach his real passion was coaching and so he didn't spend a lot of time working with me on the classes I found difficult. I did have multiple "angels" that reached out and taught me how to learn along the way. I had an English teacher who sat down for hours and talked to me about life. I had a math tutor who always pushed me to ask questions over and over when I didn't get the information the first time. In addition, I had a neighbor who was an engineer who went to the University of Tennessee. He had a collection of encyclopedias that he let me borrow whenever I wanted to. He offered his own advice to me as well about life and school. I was surrounded by very caring and supportive people who took up the slack when my parents couldn't help me. I believe we all have angels along the way. People who show kindness when times get tough. I learned so much for their time and efforts. I will be forever grateful for their support.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I have a number of clients that have executive functioning deficits and ADHD with and without Autism. I breakdown tasks and provide plans to help the student based on their particular needs. For example, if a student is struggling with concepts, I may provide various examples to give the student options for looking at the same concept. I also provide oversight on how to develop independent learning. I provide ideas on how they can become more independent since they are in a developmental phase which requires growth mindset for the future.

Both my son and daughter were 2e. I have worked with many 2e students over the years. I have ADHD so I understand the complexities of dealing with learning differences.

I have two gifted children and I have tutored for kids that attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The number one school in nation for gifted students.

I have ADHD so I am aware of the struggle some students have with ADHD. I try to keep the material as relatable as possible since ADHD is really about selective attention. I also make sure to check in often to make sure that the material is being absorbed.

I have worked with non-verbal, verbal students with autism. My son has autism so I am aware of the various issues involved with teaching that population.

I have worked with dyslexics. I have access to some of the programs such as UFLI.

I understand the concept of SPD since my son had it. I implement various strategies to help support disregulation of students.
