I like to understand what students are struggling with first, and then help build on the gaps in their understanding, whether it be through thorough explanation or simple tricks to make things easier. In doing this, I often find students having subjects they originally struggled with 'click' as they begin to understand the parts of the subject that were causing them to struggle overall.
I am currently studying at Sacred Heart University as a freshman undergrad on a 3+2 Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Dual Bachelors program, and recently graduated from high school in the top 1% of my class in the Scholars program there.
I have experience tutoring students internationally in SAT Reading & Writing on Schoolhouse.org in the 600-690 score range, and tutored at my school's tutoring center (Center for Learning and Academic Wellness) weekly for 3 years in primarily Chemistry but also Algebra, Geometry, and occasionally History.
My mission
My main goal as a tutor is to help students understand concepts I know they are capable of studying. Growing up, I always loved helping others understand things as I find learning and really understanding a topic is one of the most rewarding feelings a student can experience, and I know every student is capable of feeling it with any subject. My mission is to guide each student down the path of true understanding in whatever way helps them best, and seeing a student understand and succeed is what inspires me to continue tutoring and helping students every day.
My Story
I grew up in Staten Island, NY, but now live in Fairfield, CT at Sacred Heart University, as a Chemistry major. I was blessed to have a lot of great teachers growing up, who helped me grow to love learning new subjects and tackling new problems every day in class. This also developed into my passion for tutoring in high school, as I tutored students after school in chemistry and other subjects once a week. As a hobby, I had been singing my whole life, which developed into my passion for musical theatre in high school and now in college. Now, my day to day life is spent either in my classes, spending time with friends, or at rehearsal for a new show on campus.
Cognitive Diversity
How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs. My main goal is to understand what kind of approach works best for each student's mind. For example, if a learner can easily become overwhelmed by long passage or word problem, I would try to assist them in learning how to break down these passages to help them not be daunted by them and instead be able to easily understand them methodically. Tutoring is meant to fit the learner, not the tutor, and in understanding that it is my goal to adjust my methods to my student's mind, methods, strengths and weaknesses.
When I am tutoring students online, I try to keep them engaged by always posing questions, giving problems for practice, and talking them through problems or topics, making them as much of a part of the lessons as myself.
