Jacob is a veteran STEM tutor and former Teacher of the Year who helps students master physics, chemistry, and math from middle school through college. He meets each learner where they are, connects concepts to real life (often sports), and anticipates common stumbling blocks with targeted explanations and practice. With 15 years teaching—five focused on online 1:1—his students regularly outperform national averages on AP exams. Jacob holds a B.S. in Bioengineering (Oregon State) and an M.A. in Teaching (University of Portland). He’s coached swimming and water polo, and still borrows from athletics to make problem-solving feel strategic, not scary.

If it's 1 on 1 or a small group: I try to meet the student where they're at, and use their lived experiences to help enrich the teaching and lesson (and, hopefully, their understanding).

If it's a recorded video to be given out: I try to hit all the most common questions/problems for each unit to make sure that, even without interaction, I'm giving them a good product that helps them succeed.

Oregon State University: BS in Bioengineering
University of Portland: MA in Teaching

15 years of formal teaching experience. 5 of which has been in online, mostly 1 on 1, tutoring.

My mission

My mission is to help students gain confidence and mastery in subjects that often feel overwhelming. I am inspired by the moment when a concept clicks and a student realizes they are capable of more than they thought.

My Story

I grew up with a love for math and science, but I also remember how intimidating those subjects could feel without the right support. Teachers and mentors who took the time to explain things clearly made a lasting impact on me, and that inspired me to do the same for others. Today I live in the Pacific Northwest where I run a tutoring business focused on helping students build confidence in physics, chemistry, and math. Outside of teaching I enjoy creative writing, games, and time with my wife and our two cats. Tutoring allows me to share both my passion for learning and the sense of encouragement that helped me succeed.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I've worked with many students with varying degrees of learning disabilities. In a large classroom, it might be hard to really differentiate your lesson enough to hit everyone perfectly. However, now that I'm mainly doing 1 on 1 and small groups, it's easy to tailor my teaching style to each student to make sure they are retaining the information as best as possible.

Most of my students with diagnoses are with ADHD (including myself!). Being able to keep them engaged by call/response during online lessons keeps them from just tabbing over to something else.
