I believe the best way to approach teaching any language is starting with simplified input for beginners, and slowly moving towards authentic input as a primary source for education. The main aspects in any language are grammar, vocabulary, and speech, and I hope to aid the best of my ability in your Japanese through presentations (catered towards your personal interests), conversations, and other practice methods that would stand out and make things memorable, since I know first hand the hardest part of a language is being able to remember and use words or phrases on the fly. I'll do my best to work with you and your level and plan accordingly with your study frequency and goals with the language.

I've studied in three universities, Franklin and Marshall College, Boston University, and I currently reside in Binghamton University pursuing a degree in Japanese. I currently have an estimated N3-N2 level in Japanese according to the JLPT scale.

I've always loved helping my friends with Japanese when they didn't understand certain concepts. But where I really shone was helping my Japanese friends with English, and I've been told often I'm very good at explaining grammar concepts due to my education background and deeper understanding of how languages work (i.e. particles, sentence structure, etc).

My mission

My mission is to inspire people that languages have a profound impact on the world. With the advent of AI, many translators are becoming prevalent, including those that will translate conversations. Although I am not against these tools, many would argue that languages are useless now with such tools. But I want to reach people with my teachings and show them that there is a huge difference when it comes to learning a language vs using a translation tool, and just how much more you will feel connected to the world as a human. With over 7,000 languages in the world, knowing even just one more could connect you to so many more people, backgrounds, and stories. I've realized this learning Japanese, and hope to inspire others to realize it too.

My Story

I entered university with little goals in mind, and took a Japanese 101 class just because I was interested in anime a little bit. But little did I know that class would take me on the journey of a lifetime and lead me to where I am today pursuing a degree seriously in the language. Everything about the language and culture fascinated me, from its writing system (though kanji is still extremely hard haha), to its viewpoints, to what most would argue is the most noticeable, its pop culture. What really struck me the most though was how big the gap was between the US and Japan understanding wise, and how much both sides judge each other solely based off pop cultural aspects. There is a lot of beauty to be found in its culture and language, and since that 101 class I've been on a quest to spread that knowledge and wonder that I experienced myself (particularly when being able to visit there during a study abroad).

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I believe that every person learning a language has different goals. Whether it be from simply passing a class, to attaining full fluency, not everyone will have the same motivation or attitude. I strive to make the environment extremely fun and relaxed so that all goals can be met with a comfort level for anyone. Language is one of those things where due to its versatility, it could be applied to just about anything. So learning about you as a learner and what you like will enable me to plan ahead and create lessons that would apply to your interests and provide scenarios where you can use the language in your life, making things more memorable and likely to stick as well as making the process more fun as a whole.
