Our story

Thinkwell was founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas by educational entrepreneur Amy Bryant and a team of partners who believed that exceptional teaching should be accessible to all learners. Their goal was to combine the talents of outstanding instructors with engaging, multimedia instruction to make learning more effective and enjoyable. Originally focused on creating video-based courses for colleges and universities, Thinkwell quickly gained popularity among homeschool families who appreciated the clarity, structure, and flexibility of the platform. Over time, the company expanded its offerings to include a wide range of self-paced, college-prep and advanced courses, all led by award-winning professors and supported with lesson plans, instant feedback, and rich learning materials designed to foster confidence and mastery.

An ideal learner for Thinkwell Economics is a motivated middle or high school student—typically in grades 9–12—who enjoys learning independently and wants a clear, structured path through college-level material. It’s especially well-suited for teens preparing for AP or CLEP exams, those aiming for competitive college admissions, or homeschoolers looking for a secular, honors-level economics course that doesn’t require parental teaching. This student is curious about how the world works, enjoys real-world examples, and benefits from visual explanations and self-paced learning with built-in accountability through auto-graded exercises and assessments.

Thinkwell Economics may not be a good fit for students who struggle with independent learning or need frequent one-on-one support to stay on track. It might also be challenging for younger learners who aren’t yet comfortable with abstract thinking or who haven’t had much exposure to foundational math and reading comprehension, as the course includes college-level content and assumes a certain level of academic maturity. Kids with significant learning differences who benefit from highly personalized, adaptive instruction or those who get overwhelmed by video-heavy content without hands-on support may also find the format less accessible.

Thinkwell can be a good fit for some students with special needs, especially those who are twice-exceptional, gifted, or have mild learning differences but enjoy working independently and benefit from structured, visual instruction. The short video format, ability to pause and replay lessons, closed captions, transcripts, and printable worksheets make it accessible for students who need more time to process information or who benefit from multi-modal learning.

However, it may not be the best fit for students who need frequent one-on-one support, highly adaptive pacing, or customized scaffolding—such as those with more significant ADHD, dyslexia, autism, or executive functioning challenges—unless a parent or tutor is available to provide ongoing guidance. The program does not offer built-in accommodations or a live instructor, so learners who struggle with self-regulation or require individualized instruction may find it overwhelming without additional support.

Thinkwell's Honors Economics is a college course and is also taught in high school. In college, it is frequently a two-semester course called Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The main difference between college Economics and high school Economics is the depth of topic coverage and the pace. Thinkwell’s Honors Economics is simply a combination of our Honors Microeconomics and Honors Macroeconomics courses.

Thinkwell was first introduced to me by a profoundly gifted homeschool teen who loves their courses. In my opinion, their courses are among the best available content for high school age students.
