Mel Science Math

No reviews

MEL Science Math is a hands-on, monthly subscription designed for children ages 8 and up who learn best through doing. Each box includes all the buildable components needed to explore a specific math concept—ranging from probability, measurement, and geometry to patterns, symmetry, number sense, infinity, and even the math behind real-world structures like bridges and tools. With every kit, kids construct a working model or device that helps them intuitively grasp how math shows up in everyday life. A companion app features step-by-step video guidance from a popular YouTube science educator, along with quizzes and optional AR features to reinforce learning. It’s a dynamic blend of tactile discovery and digital support that transforms abstract concepts into engaging, bite-sized monthly missions designed to spark curiosity and confidence in math.

MEL Math is built around a concept-first, tactile learning model that brings math to life through real-world, buildable projects. Instead of focusing on rote memorization or abstract drills, each lesson invites kids to construct physical models—bridges, measuring tools, probability machines—that naturally demonstrate key mathematical principles. The kits explore a wide range of math topics, including geometry (angles, symmetry, 3D shapes), measurement (length, area, volume, historical tools), probability and statistics (randomness, outcomes, data collection), patterns and sequences (both visual and numerical), number sense (estimation, place value), and more advanced ideas like fractals, infinity, and the math behind engineering structures. Through hands-on creation and experimentation, students learn to see math not just as numbers on a page, but as a language for understanding the world around them.

Each month, subscribers receive a new kit focused on one of these core concepts, complete with materials and access to a guided companion app. The app includes engaging video instruction, quizzes, and optional augmented reality to deepen understanding. This monthly format allows learners to explore math one theme at a time, making complex ideas approachable and memorable. MEL Math is designed to align with how children learn best—by doing, reflecting, and connecting abstract ideas to real, tangible experiences.

Our mission

MEL Science’s mission is to foster a genuine love for science by merging tactile, hands-on experiments with immersive VR/AR visualizations, helping children see what’s happening at the molecular level. The program addresses the shortcomings of standard science kits by offering structured, safe, and visually rich experiences that build deeper conceptual understanding and ignite curiosity.

Our story

MEL Science was founded in 2015 by Vassili Philippov, a PhD mathematician and software entrepreneur from St. Petersburg who earned national medals in physics and chemistry competitions. He experienced first-hand the frustration of children’s lack of deep understanding from conventional chemistry sets and set out to create a subscription-based science kit that combines physical experiments with virtual reality to make concepts more intuitive. Since its launch, the company has raised over $24 million in funding, expanded globally to serve 63 countries, partnered with Vsauce’s Curiosity Box, and attracted acclaim from the Royal Society of Chemistry and American Chemical Society .

FAQ: Additional Details about Mel Science Math

A typical MEL Math lesson kicks off with unboxing and app activation. Students watch a brief video introduction, then follow along in-app to build a device—a bridge model, measuring tool, or probability machine. Once constructed, they test it, record results, and may take a quick app quiz or earn an achievement. For example, the “Explorer’s Math” kit might guide them to build a sextant and curvimeter, measure room dimensions, and calculate star-based navigation angles.

Each month a new MEL Math kit arrives, complete with all materials and digital support via smartphone or tablet. The app provides video guides, virtual and augmented reality to visualize math concepts, and interactive quizzes. Subscriptions are flexible: $29.90/month with the option to pause or cancel anytime. Bundles of multiple kits are also available, and all kits comply with US safety standards, requiring no additional supplies—just curiosity.

These kits are perfect for visual-spatial thinkers, curious builders, and those who enjoy seeing math in action. Ideal for ages 8–12 (or even older kids with math avoidance), they suit homeschoolers, maker spaces, and parents looking for screen-supported deliverables. Learners who struggle with traditional math may thrive when abstract concepts are tied to real-world applications and creative construction.

MEL Math may not meet the needs of students seeking rigorous, curriculum-based math with daily practice, drills, or extensive workbook content. It is not designed to replace textbook-based instruction for early algebra or arithmetic fluency. Kids who dislike handling materials or tech-guided learning—even though the app is optional—may not engage fully. Those under age 8 may find the content too advanced, and students needing structured classroom pacing might prefer a different format.

MEL Science’s multisensory approach, supported pacing, and visual/interactive VR elements make it appealing for neurodivergent learners, including those with ADHD or dyspraxia, though parents caution that adult supervision is necessary due to physical materials and precise instructions.

These kits are beneficial for learners struggling with dyscalculia, as they transform abstract math into tangible, visual, and interactive experiences. Rather than intimidating symbols and calculations, students are building models to make sense of quantity, measurement, and chance. Structured guidance via the app reduces reading demands, making it more accessible for students with dyslexia. For kids with ADHD, the novelty and hands-on action can capture focus—though some may need support with longer or multi-step activities.

Particularly well suited for gifted STEM learners, MEL Science kits provide hands-on depth, visual explanations, and complex chemistry content that families say keeps kids challenged and motivated.

No prep is required—each kit is self-contained. Everything arrives ready to assemble and use, and app-based guidance eliminates the need for extra materials. Plan for 30–60 minutes per kit as students follow the guided build and exploration process.

Parents should supervise initial kit setup and app use, especially to help with device pairing or safety steps. Beyond that, learners can work independently. Parents may choose to discuss results, extend experiments, or explore related math concepts, but active facilitation is optional—making this a low-stress, family-friendly resource.

Subscriptions can be paused or canceled at any time; individual kit delivery policies vary—families should check the provider’s terms for refund eligibility before purchase.
