I meet students where they are in the learning process. I highlight strengths while addressing areas to improve in order to encourage student motivation and engagement. All students are welcome and valued.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I have many years of experience working with students who have different learning styles. Those include students with learning disabilities, ADHD, etc. Upon initial assessment, I accommodate those learning styles accordingly with the appropriate approach(es) which may include various formats (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, reading/writing, drawing, incorporate technology, etc.) I try to combine several methods to ensure that I appeal to the various preferences of my learners.

I have worked online with students with ADHD. In order to keep the students engaged, I often have them talk to me using direct eye contact or a way that we come up with to let me know they are with me. I also like to include students' interests in my lessons. For example, I have worked with a student whose favorite hobby was hunting. Honestly, I know nothing about hunting, so I did my research and learned as much as I could about it so that I could use that bit of knowledge with that student. I used that knowledge and included it into our lessons whenever I could and that helped tremendously!
