Right Start Math Level C (Third grade)

No reviews

Right Start Math Level C is a solid 2nd–3rd Grade math program (depending on your learner) that uses guided activities, abacus, geometry tools, and math games to broaden numerical fluency into multi-digit operations, introduction to multiplication/division, basic negative numbers, fractions, and data representation. Families love the playful but rigorous learning built into the spiral structure and game-based practice, with just-what’s-needed worksheet work. It’s notable for nurturing mathematical insights early, especially around fact patterns and number relationships. Begin here if your learner has mastered addition/subtraction facts and can understand basic place value and grouping.

This unique, award-winning, hands-on program de-emphasizes counting, uses visualization of quantities, and provides strategies and visual pictures for learning the facts. Understanding and problem solving are emphasized throughout the curriculum.

The primary learning tool is the Cotter Abacus, a specially designed two-sided abacus that is both kinesthetic and visual. The Cotter Abacus (AL Abacus) is grouped in fives and tens for quick recognition of quantities. The second side of the Cotter Abacus (AL Abacus) teaches place value to the thousands. Children develop visual strategies as they use this manipulative.

Practice is provided with math card games, minimizing review worksheets and eliminating stressful flash cards. These games provide interesting and varied repetition that is needed for the automatic responses to the facts. More importantly, these games provide an application for new information and create hours of fun learning math facts and concepts.

Twenty-three additional materials are used in the RightStart™ program. This allows the child to approach topics in a variety of ways, creating understanding and building critical connections.

FAQ: Additional Details about Right Start Math Level C (Third grade)

RightStart™ uses visualization and language, rather than counting as the starting point of mathematics. The child is taught to visualize quantities grouped in 5s and 10s. Place value is further emphasized through transparent number naming, also called the “math way” of number naming. Twelve is called “ten 2″ (or “1-ten 2″) and 23 is “2-ten 3″. Work with four-digit numbers begins in Level B/First Grade.
Understanding is stressed throughout. The primary manipulative is the Cotter Abacus. Necessary repetition is provided through math card games.

The RightStart™ program is complete in itself. It is not a supplement nor does it need other supplements. Math card games are interwoven into the RightStart lesson plans. The games are often used as a supplement for other math programs. RightStart™ also includes the other branches of mathematics required from early on, such as geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics.
