Sophia G
I was raised in Florida after immigrating from Venezuela as a small child with my family. I have gone through many adjustments in my education journey as the world transitions to a more online-based learning/teaching structure. I had to learn ways of keeping my brain engaged with digital content despite being a hands-on learner. As I continued through my higher education, I became passionate about teaching as I realized my professors and academic mentors have had the greatest impact on my future goals and my belief in my own ability to meet those goals. I truly believe that a teacher can ‘make or break’ the experience of learning a subject. I have experience tutoring and mentoring incoming undergraduate students in life sciences, mainly biology and cell science but also English, Spanish and writing. My personal hobbies include reading sci-fi and fantasy fiction, exploring outdoors, and growing houseplants and flowers. As an immigrant, I am especially passionate about speaking out against racial prejudice. I also feel strongly about encouraging young students from different backgrounds to pursue their dreams and discouraging limiting beliefs that might stop their pursuit of higher education. I have a B.S. in Microbiology and am in the final semester of completing my M.S. in Bioinformatics. I have personal experience navigating a variety of AP courses, as well as middle, high, and collegiate education.

My mission
Sophia’s mission as a tutor is to empower students, especially those from underrepresented or immigrant backgrounds, to believe in their own potential and pursue their academic goals with confidence. She aims to create an encouraging, respectful space where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired, knowing firsthand how a great teacher can transform a learner’s experience and future.

My Story
Sophia immigrated from Venezuela as a young child and was raised in Florida, where she navigated the challenges of adapting to new environments and educational systems. As the world shifted toward online learning, she had to find creative ways to stay engaged, especially as a hands-on learner. Through these experiences, and the profound impact of her own professors and mentors, she discovered a passion for teaching. Her journey from student to scientist to tutor is rooted in resilience, curiosity, and a deep belief in the power of education to change lives.
