Blossom and Root Fourth Grade (Level 4) Full Bundle

No reviews

Blossom and Root Level 4 is an inspiring and adventurous year of fourth grade curriculum designed for children ages 9 - 12.  This creative and imaginative Charlotte Mason-inspired fourth grade curriculum provides weekly prompts for nature study, artist studies, picture studies, art projects, suggested literature selections with corresponding hands-on activities, tasty geography prompts, a hands-on and highly adaptable science program (with options for multiple learning styles), reading lessons, copywork and narration, journaling prompts, and more!

Blossom and Root Level 4 is strictly secular, just like all of our curricula. Your fourth grader will get to know the works and lives of nine diverse artists, immerse themselves in fantastic literature selections that focus on mythology and the hero’s journey, explore their own artistic voice, discover the beauty of the world right outside their door, explore physics and anatomy, and begin developing academic independence, all while gently building a creative and solid foundation that will serve them in the years to come.

Nature-Based, Creative, Secular Home Education

Our approach to parenting and homeschooling is largely inspired by our love of nature, literature, and the arts. Charlotte Mason’s teachings and the Waldorf philosophy had a huge impact me as a mom, and a former kindergarten teacher, and I wanted to give my daughters the best possible start I could, filled with delight, wonder, and play.

Inspired by Charlotte Mason and Waldorf Philosophies

At Blossom and Root, our resources are Charlotte Mason and Waldorf-inspired. While we do not follow a purist approach to either philosophy, their influences are threaded throughout our curricula (in a fully secular way.) For this reason, it is helpful and important to familiarize yourself with both before determining whether or not our resources will be a good fit for you and your family.

We highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the Charlotte Mason approach to language arts, especially the practices of narration, copywork, and dictation, as these are the foundational practices for Blossom and Root in Levels 0 and up. These practices look quite different from the language arts approach you’ll find in most schools today. If you feel your child needs more support with writing, grammar, and spelling, you can always supplement our curricula with other resources.

Our mission

At Blossom and Root, we believe that curriculum is meant to support and encourage both parent and child in their educational journey. We are committed to creating high-quality, creative, secular homeschool curriculum and resources that empower the parent educator and inspire the young learner.

Our story

I’m Kristina, and I’m the mama of Blake and Brice. I started Blossom & Root in 2015 to share our home education journey with other nature-based homeschooling families. Soon after I started blogging, I began developing our secular, hands-on, creative, and adaptable curriculum.

We now offer preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first through sixth grades, U.S. history, and Book Seeds (STEM-centered, nature-based mini-unit studies.) We are currently developing sixth grade, which will be available in late 2024.

As a former kindergarten teacher, elementary tutor, arts programming director and educator, ECE teacher, and ECE assistant director, I am passionate about providing secular homeschooling materials that honor creativity, make space for curiosity, and center nature around us and within us.

FAQ: Additional Details about Blossom and Root Fourth Grade (Level 4) Full Bundle

You choose a weekly “Wonder,” start with a 15–30 minute morning basket of read-alouds and poems, spread 20–45 minute themed lessons (narration, nature journaling, art or science connection) across several days, and perhaps end with a relaxed “heart loop” of crafts or outdoor exploration.

Blossom & Root is designed to be flexible and rhythm-based rather than rigidly scheduled, but it follows a clear weekly structure centered around thematic “Wonders.” Each week introduces a new Wonder that ties together literature, science or nature study, art, and sometimes geography or history, depending on the level. A typical week begins with a read-aloud or literature selection, which becomes the foundation for narration, discussion, and copywork. From there, families move into nature activities, science experiments, or art projects that connect to the theme. Most families spread the components across 3 to 5 days, spending anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours per day depending on the child’s age and how deeply they explore the material. Mondays might begin with reading and narration, Tuesdays with nature journaling or a science observation, and midweek may include an art invitation or hands-on project. There’s a strong emphasis on unhurried, meaningful learning rather than completing a checklist. This structure makes it easy for families to follow their child’s curiosity, skip a day if needed, or go deeper into a subject if interest sparks.

  • Parents who need a secular curriculum for their child
  • Parents who want their child’s year to be filled with exposure to the arts, nature, science, and quality children’s literature

  • Parents on a budget that cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a boxed curriculum package
  • Parents who want their child’s homeschooling experience to be beautiful, rich, and full of delight
  • Parents with hands-on learners
  • Parents who need a curriculum that includes Bible study or a religious perspective
  • Parents who want a curriculum that their child can do completely independently (Our curriculum requires 1.5 - 2 hours a day, 4 to 5 days a week, of focused time together)
  • Parents who prefer workbooks to hands-on activities
  • Parents who want an online school experience for their child
  • Parents who need an academic program for their child that mirrors what is being taught in brick-and-mortar schools
  • Parents who need every supply, book, and material for their year included in their purchase (Our curriculum is designed to use a few basic art supplies, typical household items, and many books that can be found at a library or for purchase used)

Blossom and Root is a great fit for kids with ADHD because it offers a flexible, low-pressure learning environment that encourages movement, creativity, and hands-on exploration—ideal for children who may struggle with sitting still or focusing on worksheets. Lessons are short and varied, blending art, nature, storytelling, and science in ways that keep kids engaged through multiple modalities. The program doesn’t rely on rigid schedules or busywork, allowing families to adapt the pace and format to their child’s energy and attention span. Because it emphasizes curiosity over compliance, and outdoor discovery over desk work, it supports the strengths of kids with ADHD while gently building their academic skills in a supportive, whole-child approach.

Blossom and Root is a great fit for kids with sensory processing challenges because its nature-based, multisensory approach gently engages the senses without overwhelming them. Instead of relying on bright screens or noisy classrooms, it encourages outdoor exploration—where children can move freely, touch natural materials, listen to birds or running water, and find calming rhythms in the natural world. Activities like barefoot walks, collecting leaves, drawing in nature journals, or building with natural objects offer rich sensory experiences that can be soothing and regulating. With flexible pacing and minimal pressure, caregivers can tailor lessons to support their child’s sensory needs—whether that means more time outdoors, quieter spaces, or breaks between activities. This nurturing, responsive approach helps children feel safe, grounded, and more open to learning.

Blossom & Root’s gentle, Charlotte Mason and Waldorf-inspired approach may feel a bit slow-paced for some gifted children, but many families note that it’s very easy to adapt—gifted learners can breeze through core parts, then dig into more challenging literature, deeper science or history readings, and self-directed art or nature projects to match their curiosity and pace.

A typical week in our curriculum will require around 30 to 45 minutes to prepare for. We suggest looking at the book and supply lists in the parent guide as soon as possible and collecting your materials before the school year begins. Books can be ordered online, found in used bookstores, or borrowed from the library.

While Blossom & Root does not have strict prerequisites, children beginning Level 4 should be reading most of the phonemes, graphemes, and morphemes introduced in Levels 0–3 with confidence. If a child is still developing these foundational reading skills, families are encouraged to supplement with a comprehensive phonics program like All About Reading. This allows learners to receive additional support while still engaging with the literature-rich, hands-on activities in the Blossom & Root language arts curriculum.

Parent or caregiver involvement in Blossom & Root is central to how the program is designed to function. While the curriculum is flexible and adaptable, it is not a hands-off or independent program—especially in the early levels. Families typically take on the role of facilitator, reading aloud from living books, guiding narration and discussion, preparing simple art or nature activities, and supporting outdoor exploration. This active role helps create meaningful shared experiences and supports the curriculum’s emphasis on relationship-based learning. Most families report spending a few hours per week preparing materials, gathering books or supplies, and planning out the week’s “Wonder” focus. While older children may eventually complete some work more independently, Blossom & Root remains most effective when a caregiver is consistently engaged, offering support, discussion, and the freedom to follow a child’s interests in greater depth.

Kristina Garner is the founder and creative voice behind Blossom & Root. With a B.A. in Theatre from the University of Colorado at Denver and over 15 years of experience working with children ages 2½ to 13, she is certified as both an early childhood teacher and director. Her professional background spans educational and outreach settings, but it was her journey as a homeschooling mother that led her to develop a curriculum grounded in the values she holds most dear—nature, the arts, quality literature, and hands-on learning. I was so pleased to discover Blossom and Root when I first started working on Modulo. It's an extraordinary, nature-based program designed by a teacher and homeschool mom that our families love. It's one of my favorite resources for families looking for a screen-free, nature-based approach.
