Stephanie is a math educator with a degree in mathematics education who has spent years tutoring and teaching middle and high school students. She supports learners in courses ranging from middle school math to algebra, geometry, precalculus, and AP calculus, as well as standardized test prep. Stephanie believes that everyone can be a “math person” when they have space to ask questions and explore multiple strategies. In sessions, she connects new material to prior knowledge, shows more than one way to solve a problem, and emphasizes understanding the “why” behind procedures. Stephanie has worked with many autistic, ADHD, and twice-exceptional learners and is attentive to pacing, processing time, and anxiety. Her friendly, down-to-earth style makes it easier for students to admit confusion and celebrate progress.

When I am teaching, I meet students where they are and adapt to their individual needs. I help students to see the relevance of what they are learning, the connections among topics, and multiple paths to a problem’s solution. I try to help students learn math deeply and build confidence in their skills. I know the importance of making connections with students, and I work to make sure that all of my students trust me and know that I want what is best for them.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

I have tutored exclusively for the past five years, and I was a classroom teacher for the ten years before that. I have tutored part-time since I was in college in 2008. I have tutored students from 7th grade through college, and I am comfortable with any math content from middle school through AP Calculus BC. The ability to use technology to reach students across the world has been amazing; I have tutored students in France and across the United States since I left the classroom.

My mission

My mission is to help students reach their full potential. I tutor because I know the difference a good teacher can make in a child's life, and I believe that I can help make their learning experience a positive one. My goal is to help students to see the relevance and beauty of math. I have had many great teachers in my past, and they are who inspired me to pursue a career in education. People often asked me why I chose teaching as a career when I could have done anything, and I always answered that was my passion. Not many careers allow people to truly make a difference in people's lives, and tutoring allows me to do so.

My Story

I live in southern Wisconsin and grew up on a dairy farm. Neither of my parents went to college, but they always encouraged me to pursue anything I wanted to. With their support, I was able to attend college and pursue a degree in mathematics.

Today, I live with my husband and two children in Wisconsin. My children are amazing, and I have been so grateful to be able to stay home with them as they are young. In my free time, I love to read, cook, and do yoga. My family and I loves to hike and spend time outdoors. We recently purchased an old camper, and we have loved our camping adventures!

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

As a classroom teacher in a public school, I have worked with students with lots of different needs. I believe that making connections with all students is the most important start when working as a teacher or tutor. By getting to know each student as an individual, I can meet their needs. I also know how important it is to connect with families of students with exceptional needs. So often, the parents have insights that can be very helpful when working with students with learning differences.

Since I have had children who are both gifted, I have been especially interested in working with gifted children and am currently seeking a certificate in gifted education from UW Stevens Point. I have seen how gifted children have different needs, and I am passionate about supporting them so that they can pursue their interests and meet their full potential. I think the gifted population is highly misunderstood, and I will do what it takes to support each individual as a tutor.

I have worked with 2e students in my time as a classroom math teacher. I often taught the advanced classes, so this population was often in those classes.

I am a parent of two gifted children, am gifted myself, and have taught and tutored many gifted children in my career. As I mentioned earlier, I am very passionate about working with this population.

I have only had a couple of students in my career that were profoundly gifted. These students needed a radically different experience than most children. My biggest takeaway with these children is to not limit them in any way; these students need to be able to pursue their passions and encouraged to move at their own pace.

I have mostly worked with children with ADHD in the classroom setting, but I am very comfortable teaching online as well. To keep students engaged, I use a variety of interactive activities. I also find that finding out what students are interested can help me tailor my instruction to keep them engaged.

Similarly, I have worked with students on the autism spectrum in the classroom.
