Jas is a STEM tutor with a degree in chemistry and many years of experience helping students from elementary through college-level courses. They are especially passionate about chemistry and related sciences, but they also support learners in math, biology, and general study skills. Jas focuses on building a rock-solid conceptual foundation, then layering in the level of detail needed for a student’s class or exam. Their sessions often include color-coded notes, diagrams, and analogies, as well as stepwise problem-solving that shows how to tackle complex questions without panic. Jas has substantial experience working with neurodivergent learners, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, and they are comfortable adjusting format, pace, and expectations. They also coach students through the emotional side of challenging subjects, normalizing mistakes and frustration as part of learning. Outside of tutoring, Jas has a long background in sports and knows how to translate practice, strategy, and resilience into schoolwork.

My approach to teaching is centered around clarity, structure, and personalized learning. I focus on breaking down complex concepts into digestible, logical steps so students can build a strong conceptual foundation rather than memorizing information. I tailor my instruction to each student’s learning style, pace, and goals, using targeted strategies that help them understand not just what the material is, but why it works. I emphasize active learning through guided practice, real-world examples, and frequent check-ins to ensure understanding. My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel confident asking questions, making mistakes, and ultimately mastering challenging content.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Calgary, where I also pursued minors in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my degree, I conducted research in analytical water chemistry and completed an undergraduate honors thesis focused on advanced oxidative processes. In addition to my formal education, I have spent several years independently studying MCAT pedagogy, evidence-based learning strategies, and effective science communication to strengthen my teaching and tutoring practice.

I have been tutoring for over seven years, working with high school and undergraduate students across subjects including general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and math. I also have two years of dedicated MCAT tutoring experience, supporting students through content review, strategy development, and passage-based reasoning. In addition to formal tutoring roles, I regularly help peers and younger students with coursework, study planning, and problem-solving techniques. My long-term experience has allowed me to work with learners of all levels, including those who struggle with foundational skills, test anxiety, or confidence. This has helped me develop a patient, adaptable, and strategy-focused teaching style that meets students where they are and guides them toward measurable improvement.

My mission

My mission as a tutor is to empower students with the confidence, clarity, and curiosity they need to succeed—both academically and personally. I am inspired by the transformation that happens when a student finally understands a concept that once felt impossible, and by the joy they gain from realizing their own potential. As someone who has navigated challenging science courses and worked closely with diverse learners, I know how powerful the right guidance can be. I tutor because I want students, especially young girls and students of color, to see themselves as capable scientists, problem solvers, and future professionals. Every session is an opportunity to support their growth, strengthen their skills, and help them believe deeply in what they can achieve.

My Story

I grew up in Calgary in a close-knit Punjabi community, surrounded by family and mentors who taught me the value of hard work, curiosity, and lifting others up. School didn’t always come easily—science felt overwhelming at first—but supportive teachers and countless hours of practice helped me grow from a struggling student into someone who fell in love with chemistry and problem-solving. That journey is what inspired me to start tutoring; I wanted other students, especially young girls and students of color, to feel seen, supported, and capable in spaces where they are often underrepresented. Today, I live in Calgary and spend my time tutoring, doing research, writing, cooking, and staying active at the gym. My life is full, balanced, and rooted in community, and tutoring continues to be one of the most meaningful parts of it because it allows me to connect with students, share what I’ve learned, and help them build confidence in themselves.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I approach personalizing lessons by recognizing that every student learns differently, and that effective teaching requires flexibility, empathy, and careful observation. I start by identifying each student’s strengths, challenges, and preferred learning styles—whether they benefit more from visual explanations, step-by-step logic, hands-on problem solving, or verbal reasoning. From there, I tailor my pacing, examples, and strategies to match how their mind processes information.

I have experience tutoring students with a wide range of learning differences, including ADHD, dyslexia, processing speed challenges, test anxiety, and gifted learners who need greater depth and enrichment. For students with learning differences, I rely on structure, clear scaffolding, frequent check-ins, and multisensory explanation methods. For gifted students, I challenge them with higher-order reasoning, extension problems, and opportunities to explore material beyond the standard curriculum.

While I don’t personally have a diagnosed learning difference, I grew up supporting close friends and students who did—from helping classmates with ADHD stay organized to working with students who struggled with reading comprehension or information overload. These experiences taught me patience, the importance of meeting students exactly where they are, and the value of celebrating progress rather than perfection. My overarching goal is to help each student feel capable, supported, and confident in their ability to learn, no matter how their mind works.

ADHD:

I have worked with many students with ADHD over my seven years of tutoring, and I’ve learned that the key is balancing structure with flexibility. My approach focuses on keeping sessions active, clear, and engaging so students don’t feel overwhelmed or bored.

With ADHD learners, I use strategies such as:

Frequent check-ins and short task cycles to maintain focus and prevent drifting.

Breaking concepts into small, manageable chunks so the student experiences steady wins throughout the lesson.

Interactive problem-solving, where students talk through steps, draw diagrams, or teach concepts back to me—this keeps their minds actively engaged.

Visual cues and simple, organized notes to reduce cognitive load.

Predictable routines at the start of every session to build comfort and familiarity.

Positive reinforcement and momentum-building, which helps students feel successful and motivated.

I’m patient, calm, and never punitive—I understand that attention varies moment to moment, especially online
