Janina is a special needs educator and Registered Behavior Technician with years of experience working one-on-one with children in both school and home settings. She focuses on early literacy and foundational academics for preschool and elementary learners, especially those with autism, ADHD, and other learning or behavioral differences. Janina creates individualized lesson plans that weave together phonics, comprehension, writing, and life skills, often using tactile materials, movement, and art. She is comfortable supporting non-speaking and minimally speaking learners and adjusts communication methods, expectations, and sensory input as needed. A strong believer in child-led learning, Janina looks for ways to incorporate a learner’s interests into activities so that sessions feel fun and meaningful. Outside of tutoring, she loves being outdoors, traveling, and creating art, and she brings that sense of creativity and adventure into her teaching.

My approach to teaching is to create a lesson plan and/or environment which is engaging and exciting to learners! I like to incorporate visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic elements based on each individual learners preferences. I utilize movement and sensory support whenever necessary. Breaking down learning into small, manageable steps and then repeating the learning as needed proves highly effective. I also like to encourage autonomy and allow children to make decisions without their learning.

I studied Psychology and completed 90 credit hours of a Bachelor's Degree. I have 8 years experience working in Montessori schools and completed a certification with Guidepost Montessori. I have over 3 years experience working with special needs students and have an RBT certification. I have spent countless hours studying homeschooling and best methods of teaching and learning and am self-taught in this way.

I have tutored one-on-one for 5 years. I have specifically assisted multiple homeschool students in learning how to read, learning basic math skills and studying different topics that interest them such as history, science, etc. I have also tutored multiple public school students from 3rd-7th grade in Reading Comprehension and Writing.

My mission

My mission is to inspire learners to LOVE learning and to create lifelong learners. I aim to nurture confident, curious and capable learners- ones who truly think for themselves. By providing personalized, experience rich instructions, students become curious and engaged and learning becomes natural and easeful. I am passionate about supporting and honoring each individual child's needs and finding what works for them. I strive to create a supportive learning environment with an open dialogue where students feel like they are empowered to explore, get curious and grow at their own individual rate.

My Story

Currently I am living in Charleston, SC- I have finally realized a life goal of mine which has always been to live near the beach. I have always had an adventurous spirit and I believe certain teachers inspired this by lessons and books about different parts of the world. I truly was inspired and adored my teachers growing up. However, growing up in Phoenix, AZ and going to a traditional school- I felt a little "stuck." I was always considered gifted and excelled in school, but I lacked the freedom to really explore and be curious about things that truly interested me. After working in a nature based Montessori School and studying Human Development and the Psyche, I started to realize there has to be a different way for children to learn. Not only does there have to be, but evidence shows that the traditional schooling system just doesn't work for everyone.
I am currently teaching in a Special Education classroom for kindergartners - 2nd grade. But, I have other goals I am working on behind the scenes. My main vision, aside from tutoring, is to create a small homeschool group enrichment program. In this program students curiosity and natural abilities will be focused on and grown. Utilizing nature, play and kinesthetic learning, students will learn many different topics and subjects.
Aside from this, I love to be outdoors exploring and trying new things. Most recently, I have started playing pickle ball and I absolutely love it! I also love to volunteer with the kids and give back to those in need at my church!

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I have worked with an extremely wide range of cognitive abilities and am comfortable adapting to children's individual needs. I truly see each student as an individual and I love to figure out how to best teach them according to their needs. I have worked with children with fairly severe autism AND I have worked with children who were in gifted programs. Working in Montessori schools really taught me to adjust moment to moment to each individual students needs and I am beyond happy to do this.
I identify the child's strengths, interests and preferred ways of learning and go off of that.
Growing up- I was always in gifted programs so I know how it is to operate at a different pace than others.

I have experience with gifted children and spent a couple years specifically tutoring someone who was in the gifted program at his school.

I have plenty of experience working with children with ADHD and am very comfortable working with these individuals.

I have worked with children on the autism spectrum from 3 years old to middle school, and even mentored an adult with autism. I have worked with them one on one and in group settings. I have experience working in a school setting and in a homeschool setting.
