My teaching style is student-centered. This means that it is crucial to me to learn about the student, including their interests, their goals, their learning styles, and their motivation, in order to facilitate the most optimal level of teaching.

I am a newly graduated Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology, as well as a first-generation college and doctoral student in my family. I majored in psychology and minored in Japanese language during college. I am currently preparing for the licensure to become a certified psychologist in California, and during this time, I find myself with the passion of teaching some subjects to those who are interested.

As a young immigrant living in the states, I grew up learning to support my family members (who speak little to no English) accessing the outside world. Since college, I have been a tutor for matters like statistics and psychology, creating a fun, friendly enviornment that promotes insights and personal growth. I am used to support one's learning through: (1) identifying one's existing knowledge base and areas for growth, (2) working interactively with the student to find out their learning goals and their motivation, and (3) providing student with a student-centered, goal-oriented learning plan with realistic expectations.

My mission

My inspiration for teaching comes from a long way. I remember my first English tutor who trained me tirelessly to speak in full sentences as a child. I remember my college professor who inspired me to push myself for a higher degree. I remember my graduate school mentor who has been there to listen, to validate, and to encourage. All of them remind me of what it is like to be someone who is there to lead a bright pathway.

My Story

My first ten years of life were spent in Shenzhen, China. I was a shy child compared to many others in my class. My goal was to become an art teacher, since drawing used to be my priority in life. With the change of circumstances as my family moved to the states, the shifts in cultures and identities prompted me to pursue another way of living, where I can work to benefit others' lives.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

Though not through direct tutoring, I have trained children, young adolescents, and young adults with time management skills, effective learning skills, and application tools as a future psychologist for years. I have also worked with children and families that struggle with learning difficulties and/or neurodivergent traits, including autism and ADHD. My years of training have helped identifying each student's strengthes and weaknesses, promoting insights around ways to improve their skills as well as their confidence.

Depending on one's level on the spectrum, teaching can involve with more creatively based interventions, such as movie watching and debriefing, gaming, presenting, and making relevant artwork. Sometimes, having the student to take the lead and exploring what is it that they are into can be another effective way leaning into the course material.

I identify myself to be on the spectrum. With that said, I grew up recognizing the importance of introducing my topic in a way that matches with the student's interest. Student with autistic features may also develop different social cues. Therefore, there are other ways (including deepening into their route of interest) that can help building the reltionship as well as fostering positive learning environment.
