Iowa Assessments / ITBS
The Iowa Assessments, formerly known as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), are norm-referenced standardized tests that measure student performance in reading, language, math, and sometimes science and social studies. Homeschoolers often use them to meet state testing requirements or to get an outside benchmark of how their child compares to national samples. Administered through services like Seton or local test providers, they produce percentile ranks and grade-equivalent scores that can inform planning and documentation. Parents appreciate their long track record and broad acceptance, though they also note that the format reflects traditional school skills more than project-based learning. It’s wise to treat Iowa scores as one data point among many, not the definition of your child’s abilities.
