Matthew holds a PhD in Neuroscience, a Master’s in NeuroEngineering, and an MBA from the University of Southern California, along with undergraduate degrees in Chemistry, Structural Biology, and Biophysics. He has worked with more than 500 students in academic tutoring and test preparation, and his students report average gains of over 200 points on the SAT and four to five points on the ACT. He teaches college-level chemistry, biology, and neuroscience and tutors high school students in advanced math and science, admissions exam prep, and critical thinking. His approach is research backed and rooted in cognitive diversity, so he builds personalized plans that use visual aids, mnemonic strategies, timed segments, and interactive exercises to suit each student’s way of thinking. He has experience with gifted learners and with students who have ADHD or dyslexia, and he focuses on practical techniques that boost both understanding and confidence. Matthew lives in Los Angeles and, when he is not tutoring, he enjoys hiking and playing chess.

My tutoring experience is a blend of academic expertise and a passion for making a real impact on students' lives. I've had the privilege of working with over 500 students, helping them prepare for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. My approach is to make learning personal and effective, focusing on the individual student's needs and how they learn best.

I've helped students achieve significant improvements, with average SAT scores increasing by over 200 points and ACT scores rising by 4–5 points. These improvements aren't just about numbers; they're about helping students unlock new opportunities. As someone who relied on scholarships to fund my own education, my mission is to help students achieve high test scores that can open doors for them, too.

In addition to test prep, I've taught college-level courses in Chemistry, Biology, and Neuroscience and have tutored many student-athletes and international students. This has taught me to adapt my strategies for diverse learning styles and academic backgrounds. The most rewarding part is seeing a student grow in confidence, whether that means breaking down a difficult problem or earning a high test score that helps them achieve their goals.

My mission

What inspires me to tutor is the rewarding experience of seeing a student's confidence grow and witnessing that "aha!" moment when a difficult concept finally clicks. I'm also deeply inspired by the success of my students, especially those who have gone on to earn full-ride scholarships or excel in both academics and athletics. Ultimately, my motivation comes from a genuine belief that every student can succeed with a personalized and engaging approach.

My Story

Growing up, I often found that traditional learning wasn't a perfect fit for me. I had to learn how to adapt and create my own study strategies, which sparked my fascination with how the brain works. This journey led me to pursue advanced degrees in Structural Biology and Neuroscience, where I could dive into the science behind learning. My personal mentors were professors who recognized my unique way of thinking and encouraged me to see my differences as strengths.

Today, I live in Los Angeles, where I continue to be inspired by the energy and diversity of my community. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy exploring the city's hidden gems, hiking, and playing chess. I am passionate about sharing my life experiences to help others find their own path to success. The most rewarding part of my life is being able to connect with students and their families, not just as a tutor but as a mentor who truly understands the journey they're on.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

My approach to tutoring is built on the principle of cognitive diversity, which means recognizing that every student's brain works differently. I believe there's no "one-size-fits-all" solution, especially for students with learning differences.

I've worked extensively with both gifted students and those with learning challenges, including ADHD and dyslexia. My personal experience navigating my own learning style has given me deep empathy and a practical understanding of how to tailor my methods. I understand the frustration that can come with traditional learning methods and have developed strategies to bypass these common roadblocks.

For my students, this often means creating a personalized curriculum that might include visual aids, mnemonic devices, or brain games. The goal is to make the material accessible and engaging, so students can not only grasp the concepts but also enjoy the process of learning. I've found that this personalized, research-based approach helps students with learning differences build confidence and achieve extraordinary results.

I have significant experience working with students who have ADHD. For them, keeping lessons dynamic and interactive is key. I use a variety of strategies to maintain focus, such as breaking down complex topics into smaller, timed segments, incorporating frequent mini-breaks, and using interactive polls and digital whiteboards to make sure they're actively participating. My neuroscience background allows me to leverage an understanding of attention and working memory to build lessons that are both effective and engaging for these unique minds.
