Recommended Ages

Designed as a complete middle school earth science course (typically grades 6–8)

The 1619 Project is a long-form journalism and education initiative that reframes U.S. history around the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans. Originating with The New York Times Magazine, it has grown into books, podcasts, and free classroom materials for different grade levels. Homeschool families with teens can use essays, fiction, and primary sources to interrogate familiar narratives about the founding, democracy, and inequality. The project is widely discussed and debated, which can itself become part of civics study. Many resources are free online, with books available at standard prices, offering a deep well of material for critical, source-based history.

Archived digital versions of the CPO Earth Science Investigations and Student Book are available to access online at no charge; printed copies may be purchased separately from educational publishers.
