Minecraft Club’s educational approach is grounded in social-emotional learning, experiential play, and collaborative problem-solving. The club is designed to help children build real-world skills—like teamwork, communication, empathy, and resilience—through structured in-game challenges and community-based rules they help create and uphold. Each session offers guided activities such as scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, and creative building prompts that require planning, cooperation, and adaptability. By using a familiar and beloved platform like Minecraft, the club taps into kids’ intrinsic motivation to explore and create, turning play into a powerful learning experience.

Facilitated by Elvin, a trained educator with a background in sociology, the club also places strong emphasis on community-building and restorative practices. Children help co-create expectations for respectful behavior, and when conflicts arise, they’re addressed through playful but meaningful systems like in-game “court” sessions where students learn accountability, fairness, and resolution. Offline elements—like group games, yoga, and reflection circles—are woven in to balance screen time and support a holistic learning experience. Altogether, Minecraft Club nurtures not just digital literacy and creativity, but also the social and emotional foundations children need to thrive both online and offline.

Meet Elvin

I’m Elvin, and I created Minecraft Club during the early days of the pandemic as a way to help kids stay socially connected while stuck at home. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Sociology, where I studied the impact of social structures on communities—something I saw firsthand during lockdown. My own graduation was held in Minecraft, and that experience inspired me to use games as a tool for real connection. I’ve been a gamer all my life, and I’m passionate about using platforms like Minecraft to foster collaboration, creativity, and joy. I plan to become a teacher and love helping kids build social-emotional skills through play.

FAQ: Additional Details about Minecraft Club

A typical day in Minecraft Club starts with a warm welcome on Zoom, where kids check in, go over community rules, and get excited about the day’s activities. Once everyone logs into the private Minecraft Bedrock server, Elvin introduces a creative team challenge—like a scavenger hunt to collect rare items, or an obstacle course race where kids cheer each other on. Players might be grouped into pairs to solve in-game puzzles or collaborate on building projects, fostering teamwork and problem-solving. Midway through, the group takes a short break from screens with a fun off-game activity like a quick art prompt or a round of 20 Questions. The session wraps up with a celebration of what everyone built, reflections on how they worked together, and an open invite to keep playing with friends on the server throughout the week.

Each week, Minecraft Club meets live on Zoom for two hours, where Elvin leads kids through structured activities inside a private Minecraft Bedrock Realm. The session starts with a welcome circle and a review of club rules, followed by themed group challenges like scavenger hunts, building contests, and obstacle courses. Kids are paired into small teams to foster cooperation and problem-solving, and there’s a mix of gameplay and real-world activities like 20 Questions, yoga, or drawing to keep things dynamic. Outside of live sessions, members can continue to play and collaborate on the private server throughout the week.

Minecraft Club is a great fit for kids who enjoy creative play, teamwork, and social connection. It’s ideal for learners who are excited to collaborate on group challenges, build imaginative worlds, and engage in a mix of digital and real-world activities like art, yoga, and games. Kids who thrive in small group environments, enjoy storytelling or problem-solving, and want a space to make friends while having fun online will feel right at home.

Minecraft Club is intentionally designed to be inclusive and supportive of children with a wide range of needs, including those with learning differences, sensory sensitivities, or social-emotional challenges. The club’s structure offers a predictable, low-pressure environment with clear routines, consistent expectations, and a small group size (limited to 10 participants), which helps reduce overwhelm and build a sense of safety. Sessions combine visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements—like in-game building, verbal instruction, physical breaks, and drawing activities—allowing kids to engage in the ways that work best for them.

Elvin, the facilitator, brings a calm, compassionate presence and adapts his guidance to each child’s pace and comfort level. Rules are co-created and reinforced in a positive, community-minded way, giving all children a voice and a sense of ownership. For those who may struggle with conflict or communication, the club’s restorative “court” system provides a playful but meaningful way to practice empathy, responsibility, and repair. Flexible use of Minecraft also allows nonverbal or shy kids to express themselves through building and avatar interactions, making it an ideal setting for children who benefit from alternative forms of connection and expression.

ManishaCEO and Founder

Minecraft Club is so popular that some children have been attending every week for the last five years! Elvin is definitely one of those favorite, one-of-a-kind once in a lifetime teachers kids can't live without. When I met Elvin he was a volunteer and co-founder for Mastery Hour in his junior year at Berkeley. Now he's a full-time math teacher in Boston and a beloved teacher of dozens of students around the world.

My child has been a part of Minecraft Club for over 4 years now and it is one of the highlights of her week! She loves it. Elvin does a great job of putting together engaging educational lessons on a range of topics, as well as facilitating community amongst the club participants.
