Patrick is a retired teacher with two decades of classroom experience and specialized training in Singapore Math. He focuses on helping elementary and middle school students build strong number sense and problem-solving skills, whether a child is catching up or looking for more challenge. Patrick’s lessons follow a clear “I do, we do, you do” structure: he models a new idea, solves problems alongside the learner, and then steps back as the student takes the lead with support. He has extensive experience working with autistic students and is skilled at creating predictable routines, using visuals and manipulatives, and breaking problems into steps. Patrick also brings a gentle sense of humor and a great deal of patience, which helps nervous learners relax. In retirement, he’s learning Spanish and loves showing students that adults are learners too.

I prefer to use the following steps:
1) I solve, and you observe;
2) we solve together;
3) you solve, I observe.

I also ask a lot of questions during the session, such as, "What do you think we should do next?" This helps students to begin analyzing the process of learning so they can continue on their own.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University.
I have a a certificate that I have been trained in Singapore Math.

I ran an after school tutoring math program for all grade levels for two years.
I taught English online to children in China for four years.

My mission

I am retired and have a steady income. After twenty years of seeing students struggling because the district wouldn't allow a teacher to slow down or speed up for a student, I can now teach to a student's interest and skill set.

My Story

I grew up along the shores of the Mississippi River in western Illinois. It was all very Tom Sawyer - Huck Finn with running around unsupervised all summer with my friends. My father was a doctor so doing school work and planning for college was drilled into me.

I loved school and am compelled to help people make their lives better, so teaching really appealed to me. In fact, being a life-long learner was not how I would describe myself until recently. I learned to play guitar in my fifties. I learned to knit in my sixties. And as I approach my seventies, I am focused on learning to speak Spanish.

I am still learning to think before I speak. I have attached a picture of me establishing a life-long habit of putting my foot in my mouth.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I have taught or tutored mathematics for over twelve years, including students from Fourth all the way through 7th grade. I taught Math at Job Corps working with students 16 years old to 24 years old raising their math skills to a sixth grade level. I have tutored online over five years as a contractor teaching English to children in China
