Recommended Ages

Intro coding environment for upper elementary through early high school (approx. grades 3–9).

Blockly (often misheard as “Blocky”) is Google’s drag‑and‑drop coding toolkit that lets kids snap together colorful blocks to build programs, without worrying about semicolons or syntax errors. Used inside many popular coding sites and apps, Blockly lets learners experiment with loops, conditionals, and variables visually before viewing the equivalent JavaScript or Python. Parents like that it’s free, browser‑based, and flexible enough to power everything from simple puzzles to custom projects. For homeschoolers, it’s a great foundation for logic and computational thinking, especially when paired with real-world challenges (“Can you program the blocks to draw a square?”). It’s not a full curriculum on its own, but combined with structured lessons, Blockly can make the leap to text‑based coding much less intimidating.

Blockly is a free, open-source coding library and its demo games are free to use.
