Recommended Ages

A college-level data literacy and critical thinking course best suited to mature high school students, college learners, and adults (not recommended for children under 12).

In an era of viral charts and dubious claims, many parents want their teens to develop strong BS‑detectors. Calling Bullshit is a free course and website that teaches how to spot misleading graphs, statistics, and arguments in everyday life. Created by professors Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West, it grew out of a university class on data reasoning for non‑specialists. We love how the materials use real‑world examples—from ads to social media—to show how numbers can be twisted. It’s ideal for older teens and adults interested in critical thinking, media literacy, and data science. Some readings and lectures are college‑level and assume comfort with math, but motivated high schoolers can handle them with support. Pro tip: work through selected modules together and then invite your teen to bring one “suspect” graph or claim from the news each week to analyze as a family.

Course website, readings, syllabi, and recorded lectures are free to access online; there is no fee for informal learners.
