Kodu Game Lab
Kodu Game Lab, from Microsoft, lets kids design their own 3D games through a visual programming language, turning them into both players and creators. Using an Xbox-style interface, learners place characters, set up worlds, and define behavior using “when/do” rules that build computational thinking without requiring text-based code. Originally developed for classrooms, Kodu is free to download for Windows and works well for tweens who are ready for more open-ended design projects. Parents appreciate how the tool encourages planning, testing, and revising—core engineering habits—while still feeling like play. The learning curve is steeper than many tablet apps, and setup can be finicky on some systems, so kids may need initial adult support. Once they’re rolling, challenge them to recreate a favorite game mechanic from scratch.
