Spelling Bee

Recommended Ages

Designed for elementary and middle school students, generally up to 8th grade

The official Scripps National Spelling Bee site offers word lists, study tips, and contest information for kids who love language and friendly competition. It grew out of early 20th‑century newspaper bees and is now the best known spelling competition in the U.S. Families use the free lists and games to build spelling, vocabulary, and confidence whether or not they ever attend a local bee. Parents appreciate the clear progression from easier classroom bees to national‑level words, plus guidance on how to host their own events. It’s an especially good fit for kids who enjoy wordplay and structured challenges, and aside from travel or coaching, most materials are free.

School enrollment in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program costs about $199 per school per year; some study lists and games are available free.
