Best for K–12 learners and families interested in hands-on science

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is a pioneering hands on science museum founded by physicist and educator Frank Oppenheimer in 1969. Its hundreds of interactive exhibits invite visitors to tinker with light, sound, motion, weather, and human perception, turning abstract concepts into playful experiences. Beyond the museum walls, the Exploratorium’s website hosts videos, at home activities, and online exhibits that reflect its inquiry based approach. Homeschool families visit in person when possible or explore the digital resources from afar, using Exploratorium content to inspire open ended experiments and a sense that science is something you do, not just something you read about.

General admission currently costs about $39.95 for adults and $29.95 for youth ages 4–17, with children 3 and under free; K–12 school field trips are typically $10 per student, and there are discounts for teachers and membership options
