VexIQ
Many elementary and middle schoolers are ready for more serious robotics but not quite prepared for metal tools and sharp edges. VexIQ is VEX’s plastic-based robotics platform with snap-together pieces, smart sensors, and programmable brains designed for younger hands. It’s used both in classrooms and in VEX IQ competitions, where teams design robots to complete themed missions. Parents like that it feels more “engineery” than toy robots while still being approachable for kids around grades 3–8. It’s ideal for families who want a path into competitive robotics or a standards-aligned classroom-style experience at home. Kits and controllers carry a higher price tag than casual sets, and learning the ecosystem takes some adult orientation, but the skill progression is excellent. Pro tip: start with a basic clawbot build before customizing, so kids master the core mechanical and coding ideas first.
