4. I do not adhere to one teaching philosophy exclusively. Instead, I have an eclectic mixture of beliefs about education.

First, I love literature and writing about literature! I enjoy reading about anything: books, magazines, professional journals, and online resources. Yet, many students I have taught and tutored detest reading. The very mention of reading a selection brings moans and groans from the masses. I have found students apathetic and disinterested in reading any type of material. In the digital age in which we live, students are constantly bombarded with technology. I have noticed students are typically reactive instead of proactive when attaining knowledge. In addition, many students possess a limited perspective or world view, particularly students from small, insular communities. The combination of reaction instead of action and narrowing instead of broadening views creates a challenge I must face to effectively equip my students for life.
It is vital for educators to encourage students to seek information. Reading provides a vehicle for various types of knowledge. Students can gain deeper understandings of themselves and the world around them from literature. My goal for each student who enters my classroom is to find a piece of writing he/she connects with in a profound way. Once a student experiences the possibilities of literature, his/her world is impacted tremendously. As each individual is quite different, the literature that influences him/her will also be different. Yet, there are limitless possibilities through connections in literature. I hope each student has experience with literature that transcends the classroom. I use a variety of classic and contemporary texts in the classroom. Although classic texts often seem inaccessible to students, they provide stories with timeless themes. I want students to practice weighing difficult issues. As we read and write about selections from authors of various ethnicities, I hope students will become more aware and more sensitive to those around them. I desire for students to notice how literature highlights the struggles, joys, and triumphs of all individuals in humanity.

My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont University. I also hold a TEFL Certificate (120 hours).

I have been teaching English, Literature, ESL, and Language Arts for thirteen years. I have taught locally, online, and abroad in China, Mexico, and Dubai. My typical age and grade ranges include Middle School (11 and up) through college and adults. However, I love working with younger children as well. In addition, I also have extensive experience in tutoring SAT and ACT Reading and Writing, Test Prep (TOFEL, ASVAB, GED, etc.), editing, and communications. My students have seen significant improvement in their ACT, SAT, and TOEFL scores.

My mission

I love tutoring because I work one-on-one with students to meet their needs. Each student is unique, and nothing makes me happier than helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I can help, using my experience as a student and teacher. Furthermore, I want to aid in whatever they want to achieve. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. We learn together!

My Story

Hello students! My name is Brett, but feel free to call me Mr. Brett if that is easier. I was born and raised in Northeast Georgia, which is very beautiful. My education includes a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in English Education, both obtained from Piedmont College. I also hold a TEFL Certificate (120 hours).

I have worked hard to ensure my educational career included many different experiences of culture and methods. This is the reason I have spent much of my time teaching abroad or online. I wanted to experience what it is like to interact with people of different backgrounds and, whenever possible, share my own background and beliefs with them as well. I have been blessed in the ability to do so, although it has come with its challenges and even dangers abroad. Nevertheless, each experience has been valuable. I have included my resume to provide a more thorough outline of my teaching experiences.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

For each student, I use differentiation in my lessons to provide one-on-one time between the students and me. For example, I might have the students work independently on different tasks or (when available) use a breakout room for any students who wish to have a conference with me. This also allows me to meet with the student without an IEP. I might also group the student with higher-level students so they can learn from one another as I observe the different pairings or groupings. Finally, I would alert the Special Education department about any concerns. These same methods of differentiation and scaffolding apply to gifted students as well.
