Become a tutor

We’re looking for passionate in-person and on-line instructors to join our community of teachers. We provide training to tutors, suggest curriculum and offer support and community as needed. We have opportunities for highly experienced tutors, new tutors, and parents and caregivers tutoring for the first time. If you’re interested, apply below to be considered and create your tutor profile on Modulo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modulo is a marketplace for tutors, classes, and other homeschooling resources. Once you submit all the materials for your profile, someone will review your application within 1-2 weeks. If your photos and videos are good quality (not blurry) and your application is free of typos, your profile will likely be approved. Once your profile goes live, we’ll notify you and invite you to start collecting reviews. Families can browse profiles, book sessions, and pay directly on the site.

Modulo uses several approaches to promote our best tutors. We run a YouTube channel, post frequently in parent forums, and host events to attract families to the marketplace. We also invest heavily in SEO so families searching Google for tutors can find you. Sometimes we host open houses or sample classes to spotlight individual tutors. In addition to Modulo’s marketing, you’re welcome to share your Modulo profile (think of it like your personal website!) anywhere you’d like. We recommend tutors share it in parent groups, with friends and family, or in local school or homeschool communities.

You set your own hourly rate based on your expertise and the value you offer. Keep in mind that Modulo adds a small fee on top of your rate for families booking through the platform, but you receive the full hourly rate you set. We’re happy to advise if you’re unsure how to price your services competitively.

Because we live in a visual culture, the intro and demo videos are two of the most important parts of your application. The intro video should be about 1 minute long and the demo video should be 5-10 minutes (no longer than 10). Your videos can be casual and unrehearsed. We recommend recording in a bright, clean space. Cluttered or messy backgrounds are a major turnoff for parents. If you have a window or are filming outside, make sure the light is in front of you, not behind you. Also, keep the camera at eye level (no one wants to stare up your nostrils!). Use headphones or film in a quiet space to avoid distracting background noise like clicks or wind sounds. Always watch your video afterward to check for clear audio and good lighting.

The short answer is that you should choose a topic you love to teach and share that to show off your sparkle and passion!

Your demo video will be shared on our YouTube channel and the Modulo website to help promote you. If you’re unsure what to teach, here are some popular lesson ideas.

Families visiting Modulo can search by subject, expertise, teaching style, and schedule to find tutors who fit their needs. If they like your profile, they may either book a session directly or message you with questions. When a family books you, we’ll confirm with you to ensure you’re available. After each session, we ask tutors to write a brief progress report about how the lesson went so our team can support the family’s learning journey.

Yes! You’re welcome to offer 1:1 tutoring or small group classes. Group classes can be a great way to reach more students at once and offer a lower price per student while still earning a solid hourly rate. If you’d like to list a group class, select add a club or add a class on the add a resource page.

We require parents to give at least 24 hours’ notice if they need to cancel a session. If they cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, you will still be paid for the session. If you need to cancel, please give families as much notice as possible so we can help reschedule. Frequent cancellations without notice may affect your ability to stay active on Modulo.

Modulo pays tutors the first week of each month for sessions taught in the previous month. We pay only for hours booked—so if your tutoring session runs over time, you’re not paid for the extra minutes unless you’ve arranged that in advance with the family. Payments are made via a secure Stripe transfer. You’ll be classified as an independent contractor.

Yes! Modulo does not require exclusivity. You’re free to tutor independently or with other platforms. We only ask that any students who find you through Modulo continue booking with you through the Modulo platform so we can ensure quality, safety, and payment protection for both you and the family.

No, there’s no cost to join Modulo as a tutor. You keep your full hourly rate, and Modulo adds a separate fee for families booking through the site.

While we do recommend some experience caring for children, or helping peers or younger siblings with homework, we do not require formal tutoring experience to work on Modulo. We are here to support you and pair you with the best curriculum to help students thrive. If this is your first time tutoring, we do recommend starting with a lower rate to build your experience and reviews. For reviews, you can reach out to people who can testify to your character, such as a teacher, colleague or family you have babysat for. It's absolutely fine to have a review from your daugher saying "mom is amazing at helping me with homework!"

Please know that we especially love applications from homeschool parents who want to start teaching other kids because of the unique experience and passion you bring to this space. If you are in that category, please make sure you mention it in your application so we can give you our full support.

Once your profile goes live, we will send you the link and you can send it to colleagues, friends or ideally parents of students you've taught. All they have to do is scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "write a review" button.
