My mission

My mission has always been to create student-led learning. We know what needs to be taught, but children know how they want to be taught, I don't believe in one method fits all and I strive to make sure that every child's needs are met.

My Story

I currently live in North Carolina. I was born in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is where I did the majority of my classroom teaching. I was very shy as a child and was afraid to ask questions if I didn't understand something. So, I did poorly in Kindergarten and First Grade. My Second Grade teacher worked with me to help me overcome some of that shyness. That's when I decided to become a teacher. And after many, many years I'm still enjoying working with children.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I've tutored children with Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, and children who were behind in their classes. My approach has always been to work with children at their own pace. I don't want them to get frustrated, just do their best. For gifted children, I include them in the planning of each lesson.

Gifted children are my favorite students. I encourage them to help me plan the lessons, I add extra activities. I enjoy when I give them something to teach me and then have a lively discussion on how the felt doing the teaching.

I've never had the opportunity to teach a child who is profoundly gifted. I would need to do a little more research on the topic and adapt myself to what I've learned when tutoring them.

I've also worked with many ADHD children. Again, you need to center their classes around their favorite things. For example, dinosaurs, dogs, sci-fi, etc.

I've tutored several Autistic children. I find that you need to see what their mastery area is and gear the bulk of the studies to that mastery area. For example, if they are really good at math, but hate reading, you need to create the reading lessons around math word problems.

Children with Dyslexia need the tutor to be patient. They need to development a method to read and be comfortable with what they're reading without being embarrassed.

This more difficult when working online. I would want to work with the parents on what approaches have worked or not worked with their child.
