Sheila is an educator, nurse, and researcher with degrees in nursing, biology, educational administration, and educational leadership. She brings decades of experience in schools and organizations to her work with learners and families. Sheila tutors science and literacy and also specializes in executive functioning and social-emotional skills, helping students learn how to plan, prioritize, and manage big goals. Using a design-thinking approach, she partners with learners to understand what’s hard right now, brainstorm strategies, and test new routines that actually fit real life. Sheila has deep experience supporting autistic, ADHD, and anxious learners and is comfortable working with complex family and school systems. Her sessions feel both practical and hopeful—grounded in evidence-based tools but always tailored to a student’s values, identity, and strengths. Outside of tutoring, Sheila enjoys walking, reading, and traveling, and she brings that curiosity about the world into her teaching.

I am an intelligent, tenacious, mindful, and empathetic teacher.
I am an advocate of the 'design thinking' process: empathize and define, share and ideate, prototype creation, and propose. My science background lends itself to making evidence based, data driven decisions. In order to increase rigor in academics, I ensure that there are engaging, relevant lessons. I am a possibility thinker, and believe in thinking outside of the box in devising solutions to improve outcomes for students. I look at data to determine the effectiveness of those solutions over time.

My mission

I have had a wonderful career as an educator in many different capacities. My experiences provides me with a unique background to help others who may be struggling, or who need extra enhancement of the subject matter. I am a science nerd, so I understand when students are nerds like me or are really focused on one subject and absolutely love it! I am on a mission to help others love learning as much as I have; I am a lifelong learner.

My Story

Born into modest beginnings in the rural Midwest, my early academic path was anything but smooth. I dropped out of high school, not because I lacked intelligence, but because I was disengaged and uninspired by the majority of my teachers. My journey is marked by tragedy and triumph, heartbreak and healing, self-doubt and steely resolve. But I never stayed down. Driven by a fierce internal compass anchored in integrity and social responsibility, I fought her way back into the system. I returned to school, pursued higher education while raising three daughters as a single mother, and eventually earned my doctorate—proving to myself and others that intelligence, grit, and purpose can thrive despite the odds. I didn’t just make it through the system—I held up a mirror to it. Like Erin Brockovich, I exposed injustice where others saw status quo. In underfunded classrooms and underserved communities, I called out inequity, challenged bureaucracy, and pushed for the inclusion of every learner—especially those whose needs are often overlooked: children of poverty, English learners, trauma-affected youth, LGBTQ+ youth, and neurodiverse students. I led with heart but never hesitated to fight for what was right.

✅ RESULTS THAT STICK

Happier students, empowered parents, re-engaged professionals. My clients build skills and confidence that last.

I have extensive experience as an administrator in overseeing and compliance with IEPs, 504s and learning difference plans, as well as background in the differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of individual students.

I have worked with several students who were 2e, both intellectually gifted and on the spectrum, especially with regard to social behaviors that made it hard for them to make friends.

I believe gifted students I have worked with in the past benefitted the most from project-based learning. It provides an opportunity for them to shine!

I am familiar with students who have this, but have not worked directly with them.

I identify as having ADHD and have worked extensively with students in elementary and secondary schools who are as well. The most important consideration is to break information and tasks into smaller components, as well as to allow time for processing and asking questions.

I have worked with children at the elementary level who have autism, with varying degrees on the spectrum.

I am familiar with students who have this, but have not worked directly with them.

I have a very close family friend (a seven year old boy) who has extreme sensory processing challenges, so I am very familiar with the precautions and considerations that need to be taken to make sure he feels safe.
