Our mission

At Blossom and Root, we believe that curriculum is meant to support and encourage both parent and child in their educational journey. We are committed to creating high-quality, creative, secular homeschool curriculum and resources that empower the parent educator and inspire the young learner.

Our story

I’m Kristina, and I’m the mama of Blake and Brice. I started Blossom & Root in 2015 to share our home education journey with other nature-based homeschooling families. Soon after I started blogging, I began developing our secular, hands-on, creative, and adaptable curriculum. We now offer preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first through sixth grades, U.S. history, and Book Seeds (STEM-centered, nature-based mini-unit studies.) As a former kindergarten teacher, elementary tutor, arts programming director and educator, ECE teacher, and ECE assistant director, I am passionate about providing secular homeschooling materials that honor creativity, make space for curiosity, and center nature around us and within us.

FAQ: Additional Details about Blossom and Root A River of Voices: The History of the United States Vol. 1

A sample lesson from A River of Voices might begin with reading a picture book or excerpt from a living book that highlights an Indigenous perspective on early American history. After the reading, the parent and child discuss guided questions that encourage reflection and empathy, such as “How might this story feel different if it were told by someone else?” Next, the child might complete a creative activity—like drawing a map of tribal homelands, writing a journal entry from the point of view of a historical figure, or building a simple craft related to the culture studied. The lesson wraps up with an optional extension: listening to a traditional story, exploring a related historical photo, or reading a primary source.

Blossom and Root’s A River of Voices – The History of the United States Vol. 1 is a flexible, literature-rich U.S. history curriculum that unfolds over 36 weeks, guiding students from the earliest colonies through 1791. Designed for elementary learners (and adaptable up to high school), it offers three learning “pathways”—Gentle, Standard, and Advanced—so families can choose a depth that suits their child’s age, sensitivity, and interest. Each lesson begins with a curated selection of living‑book readings or videos, followed by hands-on exploration projects (like map work, crafts, or virtual field trips), and finishes with student notebooking that includes narration, drawing, or timeline entries. Rooted in multiple perspectives—especially those historically marginalized—the curriculum encourages empathy, critical thinking, and meaningful rabbit-trail deep dives, all within a relaxed, low-pressure, well-supported homeschool framework

A River of Voices is an ideal fit for families seeking a secular, inclusive U.S. history curriculum that centers diverse perspectives and encourages critical thinking from a young age. It’s especially well-suited for homeschoolers who value literature-based learning, meaningful discussion, and flexible pacing. The multiple learning pathways—Gentle, Standard, and Advanced—make it a great choice for families with children of varying ages or needs, including highly sensitive learners or those who benefit from visual and hands-on activities. It’s also a strong fit for parents who want to introduce complex topics like colonization, slavery, and Indigenous histories in an age-appropriate, thoughtful way without relying on dry textbooks.

A River of Voices may not be a good fit for families seeking a traditional, textbook-based U.S. history program focused on memorization, dates, and patriotic narratives. It may not suit those who prefer a religious or faith-based curriculum, as it is explicitly secular and emphasizes multiple perspectives, including those that challenge dominant historical narratives. Families looking for a fast-paced, worksheet-heavy approach or who are uncomfortable discussing topics like colonization, slavery, or systemic inequality may also find it less aligned with their goals. Additionally, it may require more parental involvement than some open-and-go programs, which could be a drawback for those seeking completely independent learning.

Parents and caregivers play an active role in A River of Voices by reading aloud from selected books, guiding discussions using provided questions, and helping children engage with hands-on projects and notebooking activities. They choose the appropriate learning pathway (Gentle, Standard, or Advanced) based on their child’s needs, and tailor the pacing and depth of each lesson. While the curriculum provides structure and guidance, it’s designed to be flexible, allowing families to follow their child’s interests, revisit topics, and adapt activities to fit their learning style.

To get the most out of A River of Voices, start with the pathway that best fits your child but feel free to mix and match across levels based on interest and readiness. Use the notebooking pages flexibly—let your child draw, dictate, or write based on their strengths. Choose read-alouds that genuinely engage them, even if you swap out a recommended title. Embrace rabbit trails and follow their curiosity when they want to dig deeper into a topic. Keep a consistent weekly rhythm to build momentum, and don’t skip the discussion questions—they spark the richest learning. Enhance the experience with maps, timelines, and family participation to bring history to life. Most importantly, focus on connection and exploration rather than trying to complete every activity perfectly.
