FIRST LEGO League
Designed for grades K–8, introducing children ages 4–16 to STEM and robotics through age‑appropriate LEGO challenges
Some kids only really light up when learning is part of a team mission, not just a solo project. FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a global robotics program where kids design and code LEGO robots to complete themed missions on a challenge mat while also developing a research project. Run by the nonprofit FIRST with LEGO Education, it’s built to foster STEM skills, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. Parents love that even shy kids often find a role—programmer, builder, researcher, presenter. It’s ideal for roughly ages 9–14 and often runs through schools, clubs, or community groups. Costs for registration, robot kits, and travel can add up, and seasons require consistent time commitments, but the growth in confidence and skills is impressive. Pro tip: look for an existing team before starting your own; if you do start one, recruit another adult co-coach to share the load.
In the 2025–26 season for U.S. and Canadian teams, registration is about $140 for a FIRST LEGO League Explore team and $275 for a FIRST LEGO League Challenge team, with additional expenses for LEGO robot kits and event travel
