Recommended Ages

Supports caregivers of young children from birth through about age 8 with nature-based, child-led outdoor playgroups.

Free Forest School is a network of parent-led outdoor playgroups where families meet regularly in parks or wild spaces to let young children explore nature through unstructured play. There are no formal lessons—just time to climb, dig, build, and imagine together, with adults acting as facilitators rather than directors. Parents appreciate the emphasis on community, accessibility, and child-led exploration, which aligns well with play-based and nature-based education philosophies. Because groups are free or very low-cost, Free Forest School can be an excellent anchor for regular outdoor time in early childhood.

Access to the Our Outdoors online community uses a sliding-scale, pay-what-you-can membership donation, and local nature play events listed there are free, child-friendly, and open to the public.
