Hannah N
Hannah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in English as a Second Language from Michigan State University and is certified to teach Mathematics and ESL for grades six through twelve. She spent seven years at an international school in Ankara, Turkey, teaching a range of courses and supporting literacy across the curriculum through writing labs, reading groups, and academic English, and has spent the past two years focused on one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, ESL, math, and study skills. Her approach is student-centered and active, combining guided questioning with clear modeling and practice—think short, high-interest texts, vocabulary routines, graphic organizers, and revision checklists—while balancing patience and high expectations. She has worked with learners with ADHD and with gifted students, using practical strategies like summary sheets, paced mini-tasks, and regular check-ins to support focus and retention. Some of her proudest moments include helping reluctant readers gain confidence and helping students who had repeatedly struggled in math not only pass but leave with lasting belief in their abilities. Families appreciate her clarity, calm energy, and talent for turning frustration into curiosity. Outside of teaching, she enjoys swimming, watercolor painting, and is exploring ceramics

My teaching approach is student-centered, focusing on active learning rather than passive listening. I encourage students to do the thinking by guiding them through observation, critical reasoning, and open-ended questions, which fosters a deeper understanding of concepts beyond memorization or rote procedures. I strive to connect mathematics to real-world situations and application-based problems, helping students see the relevance and usefulness of what they are learning. In my sessions, I balance patience, compassion, and encouragement with high expectations, keeping students accountable to their goals and active participation.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University, where I majored in Mathematics and minored in English as a Second Language. I hold state certification to teach both Mathematics and ESL for grades 6–12.

My tutoring journey began in high school, when I often helped friends with their math classes. I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed seeing the moment they “got it” and how rewarding it was to explain concepts in ways that made sense to them. This passion led me to pursue teaching as a career. After graduating, I spent seven years teaching at an international school in Ankara, Turkey, where I taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Precalculus, and Calculus. Teaching across this wide range of courses gave me a strong understanding of how mathematical concepts build on one another—knowledge that is invaluable when tutoring, as I can anticipate both what students should already know and what they’ll need for future success. For the past two years, I have focused on one-on-one tutoring, which I love because it allows me to truly get to know my students and tailor my teaching to fit their individual learning styles.

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs. The first step in personalizing lessons is getting to know my student. Building a strong relationship creates a safe space where they feel comfortable sharing struggles, asking questions, and learning from mistakes. I begin by asking about their past experiences with math, which helps me understand both their strengths and challenges. From there, I adapt my teaching by trying different strategies to find what best fits their learning style.
I have worked with students with ADHD and, through collaboration with both the student and parents, found effective methods to support focus, confidence, and retention. I also enjoy working with gifted students, challenging them with deeper, application-based problems that encourage creativity and critical thinking. My overall goal is always to meet students where they are and guide them toward growth in a way that feels encouraging and effective.
I have worked with numerous students with ADHD and have found that personalized strategies can make a big difference. For one student, creating a summary sheet after each lesson and explaining problems in her own words greatly improved her retention, as she sometimes forgot concepts shortly after practicing. The summary sheet gave her a reference to revisit, and articulating solutions in her own words reinforced understanding. I also bring high energy to lessons to help students stay engaged and take extra steps to remind them of deadlines, supporting both focus and organization.
When my son began struggling in math, we knew we needed a tutor and we could not have found a better one than Hannah! Hannah's friendly demeanor and ability to clearly and effectively explain the material to my teen helped him better understand his coursework and succeed in his classes. She was always well-prepared, patient, and encouraging, and able to adapt her pace and instructional style to my teen's changing needs over the course of two high school classes and an SAT prep class. Her instruction and support were instrumental not only to helping him understand the material and succeed academically, but also to help restore his confidence in his ability to do so. Hannah was knowledgeable, well-prepared, patient, encouraging, and highly adaptable as a teacher.
Increase confidence and accountability. Her willingness to personalize the lessons and cater to the needs of each child. Recognizing a need. Great communication with parent. Made children feel at ease.
My goal was to accurately understand and perform well in college algebra. Hannah enabled me to do this effectively, and I passed the class with her help. She was very understanding and easy to follow along. Her teaching style was very effective and she supported me throughout.
