Iowa Assessments and ITBS

Another name for the Iowa Assessments, used for norm-referenced testing in grades K–12

“Iowa Assessments and ITBS” is simply another way of referring to the same family of exams: the current Iowa Assessments and their predecessor, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Both are multiple-choice, normed tests created by the University of Iowa’s testing program and now published by Riverside Insights, used nationwide to measure core academic achievement. Homeschooling families turn to them for annual progress checks, umbrella-school requirements, or reassurance that a nontraditional path is still covering basics. The tests must be ordered through approved vendors and given under specific conditions, so plan ahead for windows and return shipping. Remember that strong readers often test “high” across many areas; subject-specific work samples can offer a more nuanced picture.

For homeschoolers, Iowa Assessments/ITBS through testing vendors typically cost about $40–$50 per student per test (paper or online); Iowa plus CogAT packages can be around $70 per student.
