Our mission

The mission of Science Mom is to make science and math learning engaging, accessible, and inspiring for families everywhere. Through self-paced, secular, and visually rich video courses paired with interactive doodle notes, polls, quizzes, and hands-on projects, they aim to empower learners to explore core concepts with confidence and curiosity. By keeping prep minimal and content lively, their goal is to support diverse learning styles and bring joyful, real-world education into homes and classrooms, fostering a lifelong love of discovery.

Our story

Science Mom (Jenny Ballif) and Math Dad (Serge Ballif) began their journey when Jenny, a plant science expert, started bringing weekly science demos to her son’s second-grade class in 2013, where she earned the nickname “Science Mom.” Wanting to make science fun and accessible for more families, she teamed up with Serge, a math Ph.D. and former college instructor, to create engaging, educational YouTube videos. Their channel grew quickly, especially during the pandemic, leading to the development of full self-paced, secular courses in biology, chemistry, and math. These courses blend entertaining video lessons with doodle notes, quizzes, polls, and hands-on projects, all designed to require minimal prep while deeply engaging learners. What started as classroom demos evolved into a global resource for joyful, real-world science and math learning at home.

FAQ: Additional Details about Math Dad Fraction Ninja Bootcamp Level 1

Science Mom & Math Dad lessons typically begin with a video that introduces a big idea in math or science through stories, visuals, or real-life connections. After watching together, families dive into hands-on experiments, printable challenges, or interactive tools like Desmos or card games, applying what they’ve learned in a way that’s engaging and often collaborative. Whether it’s solving an equation, testing the pH of common liquids, or building a model, each activity reinforces core concepts while sparking curiosity and critical thinking.

Fraction Ninja Bootcamp Level 1 is self-paced, with video “training” modules, associated “practice” problems, a “quest” (application or challenge), and a “share your wisdom” reflection task. Typically, a student would watch a short video lesson, complete the practice worksheet, then do the quest, and finally respond to a reflection or explanation prompt. To integrate into a homeschool day, you might schedule this as one math block (e.g. 30–45 minutes): begin with watching the training video (often just a few minutes), then move immediately to the practice worksheet (guided or independent), followed by the quest (which may require thinking, drawing, or applying). The “share your wisdom” task can be done verbally or in writing (or audio recording). Depending on your child’s pace, you may stretch one stage over one or more days. Because the course is self-guided, parents don’t need to prepare lessons in advance; you simply monitor progress, check worksheets, help when stuck, and ensure the student moves through the levels. If a child is struggling, you can pause, rewatch, use physical fraction manipulatives, or provide extra examples until mastery is achieved before moving on. If your child completes early, they can move forward at their own pace.

Fraction Ninja Bootcamp Level 1 is designed for learners who are relatively new to the concept of fractions and need a structured, gentle introduction. If your child is ready to move from “what is a fraction?” to understanding parts of a whole, equivalent fractions, and locating fractions on a number line, this course offers video lessons, worksheets, quests, and reflection (“share your wisdom”) tasks that guide them step by step. It’s ideal for a student who benefits from scaffolded practice with clear visuals, gradual pacing, and structured review.

This level is not a good fit for students who already have a solid grasp of fraction basics (e.g. they can confidently name numerator/denominator, find equivalent fractions, order fractions, locate on number lines). If a child is ahead in their fraction knowledge or is ready for operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying) with fractions, they may find this pace too slow or redundant. Also, students who struggle deeply with arithmetic (e.g. not fluent in multiplication/division facts) might find the prerequisites taxing without extra support.

The course uses multiple modalities—video instruction, printable worksheets, quests (hands-on or applied), and “share your wisdom” reflection tasks—which helps learners with different learning preferences. For a student with ADHD or ASD, the short video segments and quest structure provide natural breaks and variety. For dyslexic learners, having audio/visual explanations reduces reliance on heavy reading. For a student with dyscalculia, the scaffolded layering (starting with visuals of equal pieces, then gradually introducing abstraction) helps build conceptual grounding before procedural work. Gifted learners can move through the stages more briskly (revisiting or skipping content) and may enjoy the self-paced mastery approach. Because it is self-paced, parents or tutors can adjust pacing, rewatch, or add supplementary supports (manipulatives, drawn visuals) as needed.

Science Mom and Math Dad work very well for gifted and 2e learners, offering engaging, rigorous science exploration with flexibility to differentiate. For profoundly gifted kids, it’s a strong starter—pair with deeper extracurricular projects or independent research to meet their advanced needs.

Gifted learners appreciate the in-depth explanations and real-world science, which are great for skill-building like note-taking even when content isn’t fully new.

Twice-exceptional (2e) or accelerated students can still benefit, especially when pairing familiar topics with scaffolded academic techniques.

Profoundly gifted students seeking autonomy and depth will find the self-paced, inquiry-driven structure supportive; however, they may need more complexity or opportunities for independent extension beyond the provided material.
