MEL Med is an immersive, hands-on medical science subscription designed for teens ages 14 and up who are curious about healthcare, biology, and real-world lab skills. Each monthly kit explores a different area of medicine—such as human anatomy, diagnostics, pharmacy, surgery, and emergency care—through high-quality experiments and simulations. Students might practice suturing a synthetic wound, use a tablet press to make real vitamin supplements, or investigate lung capacity using medical tools. Lessons are guided by doctors through the MEL Science app, which includes instructional videos, interactive quizzes, and simulated patient cases. Topics span physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, medical technology, and lab techniques, making MEL Med a perfect choice for aspiring doctors, nurses, or biomedical scientists.

MEL Med employs an immersive, inquiry-based learning model rooted in professional practice. Each kit is co-designed by doctors, biologists, and pharmacists, blending science education with authentic medical skills (e.g., suturing, diagnostics, and drug formulation). App-based lessons reinforce concepts through video demos, quizzes, and simulated patient cases, engaging multiple senses and learning styles. By bridging physical experimentation with digital interactivity, the program nurtures both analytic thinking and procedural skills. It prioritizes understanding over rote memorization, inviting teens to predict outcomes, perform procedures, diagnose scenarios, and reflect on results in a low-pressure environment. Alignment with common safety standards (e.g., CPSC compliance) ensures reliability and rigor.

What kids will learn

Our mission

MEL Science’s mission is to foster a genuine love for science by merging tactile, hands-on experiments with immersive VR/AR visualizations, helping children see what’s happening at the molecular level. The program addresses the shortcomings of standard science kits by offering structured, safe, and visually rich experiences that build deeper conceptual understanding and ignite curiosity.

Our story

MEL Science was founded in 2015 by Vassili Philippov, a PhD mathematician and software entrepreneur from St. Petersburg who earned national medals in physics and chemistry competitions. He experienced first-hand the frustration of children’s lack of deep understanding from conventional chemistry sets and set out to create a subscription-based science kit that combines physical experiments with virtual reality to make concepts more intuitive. Since its launch, the company has raised over $24 million in funding, expanded globally to serve 63 countries, partnered with Vsauce’s Curiosity Box, and attracted acclaim from the Royal Society of Chemistry and American Chemical Society .

FAQ: Additional Details about Mel Science Medical School

A typical MEL Med lesson begins with unboxing the kit and launching the companion app, where a doctor-led video guides the student through setup, background concepts, and safety tips. Students then complete a series of hands-on experiments, often making or using real medical tools, followed by quizzes or interactive prompts to reinforce learning. Most kits also include a simulated patient scenario that puts new knowledge into context. For example, in the “Pharmacy” kit, students learn about drug formulation by using a tablet press to create their own vitamin C tablets, then test their effectiveness with a color-based acidity reaction. The experiment is framed within a scenario about choosing the right dosage and delivery method for a patient, connecting the lab work to real-world medical thinking.

Subscribers receive a monthly kit packed with professional-grade tools and materials for up to five medical science experiments. The MEL Science app guides users through each step with doctor-led video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and scenario-based virtual patients. Kits can be used in sequence or mixed; every experiment can be repeated and shared with peers.

MEL Med is perfect for motivated teens aged 14+ who are passionate about science, medicine, or careers in health fields. It suits learners who enjoy immersive, hands-on STEM education and thrive with self-directed or guided experiments. Those aspiring to careers in healthcare or biomedical research will find this early exposure especially valuable, as will homeschoolers, co-op groups, or curious learners wanting real-world laboratory experiences.

This subscription isn’t designed for younger children, as it requires maturity to handle tools like scalpels and syringes. It’s also not ideal if your teen prefers text-heavy or purely theoretical learning—MEL Med focuses on application over terminology. Families without access to a tablet or smartphone may miss out on critical app-based content like video guides and virtual patients. And if your teen needs daily classroom-style instruction or high school-level theory, this once-per-month kit model may feel too lightweight.

MEL Med kits are well-suited for teens who excel through hands-on learning and step-by-step visual guidance. Students on the autism spectrum can benefit from the clear, structured sequencing of activities, while those with dyslexia appreciate the minimal reliance on reading—majority of instructions are visual or video-based. For learners with ADHD, the real-world, engaging tasks can capture interest effectively, though parental support may be helpful to maintain focus throughout multi-step procedures.

Particularly well suited for gifted STEM learners, MEL Science kits provide hands-on depth, visual explanations, and complex chemistry content that families say keeps kids challenged and motivated.

No formal prerequisites, though learners should be comfortable following adult supervision during experiments; reading comprehension and basic safety awareness are helpful.

Subscriptions can be paused or canceled at any time; individual kit delivery policies vary—families should check the provider’s terms for refund eligibility before purchase.
