Best for advanced high school, college-level, and adult language learners and educators

The National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland develops language learning and assessment resources, including some online tools and programs. While much of its work is aimed at institutions and government, homeschoolers can sometimes access self-study materials—especially for less commonly taught languages. Parents of serious high school linguists appreciate the emphasis on proficiency and authentic usage rather than only textbook dialogues. Not every resource is free or easy to navigate, but for motivated learners, NFLC offerings can be a valuable supplement.

The NFLC e-Learning Portal is free to access after creating an account, offering thousands of online language-learning and assessment materials at no cost.
