Night Zookeeper is an online platform where children create their own zoo, adopting an avatar and inventing magical creatures while progressing through interactive writing prompts, comprehension games, drawing challenges, and video lessons. Daily or weekly sessions invite students to complete challenges like story writing or spelling games, with automatic voice support for developing readers and personalized feedback from tutors. Parents or caregivers manage progress via a dashboard, adjust difficulty levels, and set assignments. It blends elements of gamified learning with creative writing and fine motor development, leaning into an experiential, play-based learning philosophy rather than formal pedagogies like Montessori or Waldorf.

What kids will learn

Our mission

Night Zookeeper’s mission is to make reading and writing fantastically fun for children ages 6–12 by turning literacy into an imaginative, game-driven adventure. It aims to combat writing reluctance by framing each lesson as part of a charming zoo-world narrative, and it stands apart from traditional ELA programs through its integration of storytelling, drawing, online games, and tutor feedback—all wrapped in a richly gamified environment.

Our story

Night Zookeeper was founded in London in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson to address a gap in literacy education that engaged children creatively. Drawing on their backgrounds—Davidson in creative arts and Hutson as a primary school teacher—they transformed what began as a classroom drawing tool into a full online writing and reading platform. The program quickly gained acclaim, earning recognition as one of the 50 best apps for kids in 2013 and 2014, and later secured awards including a BAFTA nomination in 2016, a BETT Award for Best in Literacy (2016), and the Teachers’ Choice award in 2021

FAQ: Additional Details about Night Zookeeper

Your learner logs in, reads a whimsical writing prompt, creates a character in a magical zoo world, writes a short story, receives animated tutor feedback, and then explores other student submissions for inspiration—building imagination and writing skills.

This program is best suited for children aged 6 to 12 who are excited by storytelling, imaginative play, and games. It works particularly well for reluctant writers who benefit from structured prompts and voice support, creative kids who enjoy inventing characters and drawing, and students who thrive on positive reinforcement and incremental goals within a narrative-driven, gamified environment.

Night Zookeeper is likely not a good fit for families seeking a comprehensive language arts curriculum with formal grammar instruction, in-depth essays, or test-prep focus. It may be less suitable for teens or advanced writers needing rigorous academic structure, and for families who prioritize off-screen learning or minimizing screen time.

Night Zookeeper has proven particularly effective for children with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, and other learning differences. Its flexible pace, gamified rewards, read-aloud tools, and creative focus support engagement and reduce common barriers in traditional writing instructio

A great fit for gifted and creative writers who enjoy storytelling and building characters. Families sometimes add grammar or structure-based tools to complement the open-ended, imaginative nature of the platform.

Children should be able to type or use voice support for writing tasks; reading at or below grade-level is supported through built-in read-aloud features.

Night Zookeeper offers a free trial, and subscription billing is monthly; cancellations before the next billing cycle prevent further charges, but refunds for past months depend on the provider’s terms.

Families say the best way to get the most out of Night Zookeeper is to use it consistently, ideally for 30 to 60 minutes a few times a week, to help children build momentum and confidence in their writing. They recommend taking time to read through the tutor feedback with your child, using it as a conversation starter about how to improve writing without making it feel like a correction. For younger children or those with fine motor challenges, caregivers often use the built-in voice-to-text or read-aloud features to reduce frustration and keep the experience enjoyable. Many families find it most effective when used as a supplement to other language arts activities like grammar workbooks, reading aloud, or handwriting practice. Treating it as an imaginative, creative outlet rather than a strict academic task helps kids stay excited and engaged.

Meet Josh and Paul

Night Zookeeper was co-founded by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson, two longtime friends united by a passion for creativity and education. Joshua, a children’s author and creative strategist, partnered with Paul, a primary school teacher who first invented the “Night Zoo” concept in his classroom to inspire reluctant writers through imaginative storytelling. Together, they launched Night Zookeeper in 2012 as a gamified writing platform where kids could create magical animals and unlock stories by writing. Joshua led the development of the brand’s book series and TV adaptation, while Paul shaped the educational framework that blends creative play with real writing skill development.

ManishaCEO and Founder

Night Zookeeper is such a great fit for kids who love videos and online games, but might be struggling with creative writing. We've recommended it to a lot of families who have kids with resistance to writing and it's been a total game-changer for them.
