I think that my background as a writer and teacher would be of great benefit to the proposal team. I have worked in the publishing field in editing and solicitation, which meant I was able to adapt and correct various types of texts. I also hold a Masters of Fine Arts in poetry from Columbia University; this entailed working closely with a small group of other writers and mentors wherein I learned how to give and receive constructive criticism in addition to honing my own writing skills. I am used to working with various teams as well as planning for and managing students of various ages and backgrounds. These experiences have given me exceptional communication and writing skills in addition to interpersonal and leadership qualities.

I work to build mutual trust and making personal connections and then build into setting goals with the student that we can monitor and track.

I graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in English and Columbia University in New York with a Masters in Fine Arts in Poetry

I've taught in a classroom or in afterschool and supplementary capacities for about 14 years. That includes lead teaching, test prep and after school help and creative workshops.

My mission

I want to work with the students' teachers to not only meet their goals but exceed them. I am a compassionate teacher who is willing to adapt and understand how a student can best succeed in the disciplines that they need help with. As a tutor, I am happy to supplement materials and activities to help my students with comprehension and retention. I have years of experience working alongside teachers to aid students in reaching their academic goals. I feel at my core I try to make personal connections with my students outside of academia--be it comics, sports or whatever we both enjoy--in order to make our work not seem like work.

My Story

I began teaching, selfishly, because I thought it would make me a better writer. Little did I know that I would stumble into a career that I would love. I have been given great opportunities and have sought to be that person in many of my students' lives. I love helping young people to express themselves and find their voice and in that process help them learn how to critically think and communicate.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

My last posting was with an autistic student with several IEP adjustments and frequent MTSS check-ins. I have worked with many students who have required differentiation based on their IEP's and 504 plans as well as supplementing gifted students with more challenging curricula.

I have worked extensively with students who are 2e, with special needs, or are close to being held back. At The Great Oaks Charter School I personally hosted after-school sessions for students facing all of these issues and have since tutored several of the same students in similar circumstances.

As a student who was predominately in gifted courses I understand the demand and requirements that follow with those courses. I have personally written AP curricula and assisted outside of school hours with students in those courses.

My biggest contribution would to help these students not only with their assignments but with managing these courses. They are hardcore and demand a ton from teenagers and while I'll do my best to help them succeed I'd also like to help them with time management and focus.

It is difficult helping students with ADHD via remote but my reliable strategy to keep them engaged is to involve them in the lesson with constant questioning and positive reinforcement.

I spent the last year tutoring a student with autism. One must build trust and communicate with the different tiers of support in order to provide the best environment the student feels comfortable in.

Reading is a learning process for everyone. It takes time to understand what hurdles a student with dyslexia may have. Based of a solid relationship, a teacher and student can create goals that are achievable and show results.
