9th Grade Social Studies

Ninth grade social studies often sets the tone for high school humanities, inviting students to connect big historical patterns with the present. Our 9th Grade Social Studies collection brings together vetted, secular resources for homeschoolers, afterschooling families, and caregivers teaching learners around ages 14–15. You’ll find world history surveys, regional deep dives, civics introductions, and social science courses, along with discussion-focused programs and tutors who help teens practice argument and analysis. Every resource is reviewed for historical accuracy, inclusive perspectives, and age-appropriate rigor so students can build strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Use the filters to explore by topic (ancient to modern world history, U.S. history, civics, or global studies), format (books, online courses, project-based curricula, or unit studies), and learner profile including ADHD, dyslexia, autism, giftedness, or 2e. Many families pair 9th grade social studies with complementary literature or philosophy from Modulo. If you’d like help choosing a path, Modulo’s AI learning concierge can suggest social studies options matched to your teen’s interests and goals.

Venice Jewish Ghetto

The Venice Jewish Ghetto, officially established in 1516 in the Cannaregio district, is often cited as the first legally mandated Jewish ghetto and the origin of the word “ghetto.” For centuries, Jews of different backgrounds were required to live inside its gates, locked at night, leading to unusually tall houses as the community grew upward. Despite restrictions, it became a vibrant center of Hebrew printing, scholarship, and commerce. Today, visitors can see several historic synagogues and the Jewish Museum of Venice, making the neighborhood a powerful place to study Jewish life, resilience, and European antisemitism across time.

The Indigenous Science of Permaculture

“The Indigenous Science of Permaculture” is an essay by writer Rohini Walker, published through PBS SoCal’s Tending Nature project. It explains how many techniques celebrated in modern permaculture—like polyculture planting, cultural burning, and community-based food systems—are rooted in long-standing Indigenous land-care practices. Walker warns that when permaculture is treated as a neutral, technical toolset, it can be appropriated and stripped from those communities. The essay invites readers to see ecological design as inseparable from Indigenous science, relational worldviews, and sovereignty, and it offers a starting point for discussing land, climate justice, and decolonizing environmental education with teens.
