Blossom & Root Level 0 follows a secular, whole-child educational approach inspired by Charlotte Mason and Waldorf philosophies. It emphasizes gentle, play-based learning through nature study, storytelling, music, art, and hands-on exploration. The curriculum nurtures curiosity and creativity over academic rigor, introducing foundational skills like early literacy and math in a developmentally appropriate, low-pressure way. Learning is centered around connection—with caregivers, the natural world, and meaningful experiences—rather than worksheets or screen time. It’s designed to be flexible, open-ended, and rooted in rhythm rather than strict schedules, making space for wonder, movement, and joyful discovery.

Our mission

At Blossom and Root, we believe that curriculum is meant to support and encourage both parent and child in their educational journey. We are committed to creating high-quality, creative, secular homeschool curriculum and resources that empower the parent educator and inspire the young learner.

Our story

I’m Kristina, and I’m the mama of Blake and Brice. I started Blossom & Root in 2015 to share our home education journey with other nature-based homeschooling families. Soon after I started blogging, I began developing our secular, hands-on, creative, and adaptable curriculum. We now offer preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first through sixth grades, U.S. history, and Book Seeds (STEM-centered, nature-based mini-unit studies.) As a former kindergarten teacher, elementary tutor, arts programming director and educator, ECE teacher, and ECE assistant director, I am passionate about providing secular homeschooling materials that honor creativity, make space for curiosity, and center nature around us and within us.

FAQ: Additional Details about Blossom and Root Kindergarten (Level 0)

A typical day using Blossom & Root Level 0 might start with a cozy read-aloud from the week’s featured book, followed by a short discussion or narration where your child retells part of the story or shares their favorite moment. Next, you might move into a gentle language arts activity, such as practicing a letter sound or doing simple copywork of a word or sentence from the story. Then you could head outside for nature study—maybe observing leaves, bugs, or clouds—followed by a nature journal drawing. Back inside, you might explore a math concept through a hands-on activity like sorting objects, making patterns, or counting with manipulatives. The day could wrap up with an art project inspired by the week’s picture study or listening to a short piece of music from the featured composer. The pace is slow and playful, with lots of room for breaks, exploration, and following your child’s curiosity.

Blossom & Root Level 0 works through a consistent weekly rhythm that blends structured guidance with open-ended exploration. Each week, the parent or caregiver uses the parent guide to walk through themed lessons across core areas: nature study, art, music, science, early math, language arts, and personal history (“The Story of Me”). The caregiver reads aloud from suggested books, guides gentle narration and journaling, and facilitates simple hands-on projects using common household or outdoor materials. Language arts includes exposure to letter sounds, story retelling, and copywork, while math lessons center on play-based concepts like counting, patterns, and spatial reasoning. Science topics are introduced through imaginative themes like space or anatomy, with short, flexible experiments and notebooking prompts. Picture and composer studies are once per week and often paired with simple discussion or art activities. The curriculum is entirely PDF-based, so each week you print a few pages for your child’s notebook, glance at the weekly supply list, and choose which suggested activities best match your child’s interests and energy—making it easy to adapt to any homeschool routine.

Blossom & Root Level 0 is an ideal fit for children ages 5–7 who thrive in a gentle, creative, and nature-rich learning environment. It’s perfect for families who want to ease into homeschooling with a secular, play-based approach that emphasizes connection, curiosity, and whole-child development over academic rigor. It works especially well for kids who enjoy stories, art, outdoor exploration, and hands-on activities, and for parents who prefer a low-prep, flexible routine. It’s also a strong match for neurodivergent children, highly sensitive learners, and those who benefit from movement, creativity, and rhythm in their day.

Blossom & Root Level 0 may not be a good fit for families seeking a highly academic or traditional kindergarten curriculum focused on early reading, worksheets, and formal assessments. It’s not ideal for parents who want a rigid daily schedule or a completely independent learning program, as it relies heavily on caregiver involvement, read-alouds, and guided discussions. Families looking for a faith-based approach or expecting rapid progression in phonics and math may also find the gentle, child-led pace too slow. Additionally, if your child prefers digital learning or needs a highly structured environment with explicit instruction, this program may not align with their needs.

Your child should recognize most of their letters and be familiar with most of the sounds they make by the time you begin. You will gently review these concepts in the curriculum, but it helps if your child already has that foundation before beginning. If your child is still learning the letters and letter sounds, we recommend beginning with Early Years Vol. 2 first.

It does help if your child can match quantities to numerals and numerals to quantities up to 10, and if they're able to orally count up to 10 before beginning. They should also be familiar with some basic shapes (triangle, rectangle, circle, etc.)

Most of our lessons can be divided up into about one to two hours of focused time together, five days a week. Our lessons are short, most of them around ten to thirty minutes long. We want your child to have LOTS of time for free play and outside time and we believe they can have a rich learning experience without spending their entire day buried in worksheets.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide ANY refunds, returns, or exchanges. Due to the nature of a digital download, these options are NOT available. Please be certain of your decision before you purchase this curriculum. If you have any technical difficulties downloading your curriculum, please contact us immediately and we will help you.

You may want to add a complete, sequential math program the kindergarten curriculum. We recommend Wild Math as a great complement to Blossom and Root.
