Our mission

At Blossom and Root, we believe that curriculum is meant to support and encourage both parent and child in their educational journey. We are committed to creating high-quality, creative, secular homeschool curriculum and resources that empower the parent educator and inspire the young learner.

Our story

I’m Kristina, and I’m the mama of Blake and Brice. I started Blossom & Root in 2015 to share our home education journey with other nature-based homeschooling families. Soon after I started blogging, I began developing our secular, hands-on, creative, and adaptable curriculum. We now offer preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first through sixth grades, U.S. history, and Book Seeds (STEM-centered, nature-based mini-unit studies.) As a former kindergarten teacher, elementary tutor, arts programming director and educator, ECE teacher, and ECE assistant director, I am passionate about providing secular homeschooling materials that honor creativity, make space for curiosity, and center nature around us and within us.

FAQ: Additional Details about Blossom and Root Second Grade (Full Bundle)

Blossom and Root Level 1 is strictly secular, just like all of our curricula. Your first grader will explore the connections between art and math, listen to you read from beautiful and diverse children’s literature selections, explore their own artistic voice, discover the beauty of the world right outside their door, and explore geology, weather, and seasons, all while gently developing a solid foundation in reading, literature, and science that will support them in the years to come.

Most of our lessons can be divided up into about one and a half to two hours of focused time together, four to five days a week. Our lessons are short--most of them around twenty minutes long. We want your child to have LOTS of time for free play and outside time, and believe they can have a rich learning experience without spending their entire day buried in worksheets.

Who is Blossom & Root First Grade for?

- Parents who need a secular first grade curriculum for their child

- Parents who want their child's first elementary year to be filled with exposure to the arts, nature, science, and quality children's literature

- Parents who need a curriculum that gently builds academic foundations in a developmentally-appropriate way, and moves at their child's own unique pace

- Busy parents who need an open-and-go program with minimal prep time each week (half an hour or less!)

- Parents on a budget that cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a boxed curriculum package

- Parents who want their child's first grade experience to be beautiful, rich, and full of delight and wonder

- Parents with hands-on learners

Parents who need a curriculum that includes Bible study or a religious perspective

Parents who want a curriculum that their child can do completely independently (Our curriculum requires 1.5 - 2 hours a day, 4 to 5 days a week, of focused time together)

Parents who prefer workbooks to hands-on activities

Parents who want an online school experience for their child

Parents who need an academic program for their child that mirrors what is being taught in brick-and-mortar schools

Parents who need every supply, book, and material for their year included in their purchase (Our curriculum is designed to use a few basic art supplies, typical household items, and many books that can be found at a library or for purchase used)

Your child should be reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like "map" and "cat," as well as CVC-e words like "tape" and "poke" with no assistance. If your child needs more support in this area at this time, we highly recommend supplementing with a full, comprehensive phonics curriculum like All About Reading so that they can get additional reading support while continuing to explore and enjoy the rich literature and hands-on activities in our language arts curriculum.

Parents and caregivers play an essential and active role in Blossom and Root Level 2, guiding their child through weekly prompts, read-alouds, copywork, narration, and hands-on activities. They help set up and facilitate nature study outings, art projects, journaling, and science experiments—though all activities are designed to be low-prep and adaptable to different family dynamics. Caregivers choose the depth and format of each lesson (indoor/outdoor options, kitchen science, crafts), using flexible prompts that support different learning styles. They also serve as discussion partners, helping children reflect on literature, document observations in their science and nature notebooks, and complete creative extensions like map-making or shadow puppets. This design empowers parents to tailor the experience to their child while fostering meaningful adult-child learning together.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide ANY refunds, returns, or exchanges. Due to the nature of a digital download, these options are NOT available. Please be certain of your decision before you purchase this curriculum. If you have any technical difficulties downloading your curriculum, please contact us immediately and we will help you.

We’ve designed Level 1 to be affordable. You’ll be able to complete a year of homeschool first grade with minimal supplies and most books can be sourced through your library or purchased used. It’s also designed to be adaptable and flexible to support your family’s rhythms and your child’s unique needs. Finally, it’s designed to be low-prep. Each week will typically require 30 - 45 mintues to prepare.

Math is not included in Levels 1 and up. You will need to add a math curriculum of your choosing. Some favorite options with Blossom and Root families include Math with Confidence, Wild Math, Beast Academy, and Right Start Math. See our "resources" page for more details on these recommendations.

I was so pleased to discover Blossom and Root when I first started working on Modulo. It's an extraordinary, nature-based program designed by a teacher and homeschool mom that our families love. It's one of my favorite resources for families looking for a screen-free, nature-based approach.
