Brett is an educator and leader with a background in elementary education, advanced educational leadership, and executive training in machine learning and business. He has taught and coached learners of all ages, from young students to professionals, and now focuses on helping kids, teens, and adults grow in math, data literacy, and study skills. Brett’s sessions often blend traditional content with real-world problems—using data sets, technology, and students’ own interests to make learning feel meaningful. He is especially thoughtful about identity and belonging and aims to create spaces where neurodivergent and marginalized learners feel seen and respected. Brett uses explicit strategy instruction, visual organizers, and step-by-step planning to support executive functioning and test prep. His calm, steady presence and big-picture mindset help students not only catch up or accelerate, but also understand how their learning fits into their lives and goals.

My approach is always calm, supportive, and encouraging. Every student learns differently, so I take the time to get to know what works best for them. Sometimes that means breaking things down in a new way, connecting concepts to real life, or celebrating every win, big or small. When we work together, it really is a partnership—because you already have the skills, and together we’ll bring them forward and make learning fun.

Executive Certificate – Machine Learning & Business, MIT Sloan School of Management, 2024

I’ve worked with my own kids, my grandkids, and students from around the world—really, teaching and supporting learners has been part of my entire life and career. Over the last five years, as the Dean of Academics and an Academic Coach, I’ve had the privilege of working with students enrolled in Excel High School and Northgate Academy. Both are fully asynchronous virtual schools, which has given me extensive experience helping learners stay motivated, organized, and successful in online environments.

My mission

“Elevating performance and culture through learning that inspires action and possibility.”

My mission is to design learning experiences that unlock potential, accelerate growth, and strengthen the systems that support people every day. I anchor my work in the quiet wisdom of Winnie the Pooh—“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart”—because meaningful learning begins with small moments of connection and confidence. I lead with the conviction of John C. Maxwell that “Everything rises and falls on leadership,” ensuring that development is aligned, intentional, and deeply human. And in the spirit of JFK’s call to service—“Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country”—I view learning as a civic act: a way to build better people, better teams, and a better future.

My Story

I grew up in Minnesota and still live here today, close to my family and grandkids, surrounded by the lakes and nature I’ve always loved. School wasn’t easy for me—not because I couldn’t do the work, but because it often came too easily, and I struggled to stay engaged. I barely graduated high school, but everything shifted when I went to the University of Minnesota Duluth. There, I joined Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, and served as a Big Brother—an experience that sparked my passion for helping young people succeed. I later transferred to St. Cloud State University to be closer to my girlfriend, who is now my wife of 34 years, and graduated magna cum laude in education with a math minor.

I’ve been shaped by incredible mentors: my mom and dad, my first principal, and a remarkable third-grade teacher who later became my colleague at an EdisonLearning school, where she and I eventually served together as national math trainers. Their belief in me—and the way they saw potential even when I didn’t—has grounded my entire career.

Over the last 30+ years, I’ve taught and coached students from around the world, including learners from Hawaii, Nevada, California, South Carolina, and even one student who completed U.S. Government while on a ship near Antarctica. Those experiences have taught me to listen first, celebrate who each learner is, and build confidence through patience, structure, and genuine connection. Outside of teaching, my life is full of reading, music, gardening, exploring nature, and spending time with my grandkids, who love astronomy, biology, mechanics, art, and anything that sparks curiosity.

Today, my life is centered around family, service, and helping young people experience those incredible “aha!” moments that change everything—and I feel truly grateful every day to continue this work.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I personalize lessons by recognizing that every student learns differently and deserves instruction that fits the way their mind works. I’ve supported learners across a wide range of profiles—including gifted, twice-exceptional, ADHD, dyslexia, processing differences, and students who simply need concepts broken down clearly.

My approach is grounded in listening, observing, and adjusting. I tailor pacing, examples, visuals, and strategies so each student feels capable and supported. With gifted learners, I focus on depth and challenge; with students who struggle, I prioritize clarity, encouragement, and small wins that build confidence.

No matter the profile, I believe every student is capable of meaningful growth. My goal is always the same: meet them where they are and guide them to that “aha” moment where learning finally feels empowering.

I have extensive experience supporting students with ADHD, including many I’ve tutored online across different grade levels and learning profiles. I keep learners engaged by using structured routines, short and varied tasks, movement or brain breaks, and clear visual scaffolds that help them stay focused without feeling overwhelmed. I’m also neurodivergent myself, so I understand the need for flexibility, patience, and strategies that make learning feel manageable and encouraging rather than stressful.
