Zachary holds a B.A. in Communications and Culture from CUNY and an MFA in Creative Writing from Saint Mary’s College of California. He has run undergraduate survey courses and volunteered as a youth literary tutor at 826 Valencia, and he brings experience coaching students across K–12 and college in writing, public speaking, and the humanities. He meets students where they are and celebrates their wins, believing that success in one area builds confidence in others. He has worked with learners who are gifted and with those managing ADHD, autism, dyslexia, sensory processing differences, and other learning needs, prioritizing trust and tailored, multimodal activities. A two-time double qualifier for the National Speech and Debate Championships, he uses debate and creative writing to strengthen argumentation, clarity, and voice. Families appreciate his energetic, student-centered approach and his ability to turn hesitation into curiosity. He reads and writes avidly, cares deeply about the American West and water conservation, and enjoys walking his dogs and playing golf.

I meet my students in the subject areas they question or exhibit doubts in, and I also radically celebrate their total academic wins. I feel success in one arena -- be it sports or academic -- greatly influences confidence(s) in another. To capitalize on and harness that joy is part of my delight in teaching.

I hold degrees from CUNY (B.A., Communications and Culture) and Saint Mary's College of California (MFA, Creative Writing).

I ran several survey courses a an undergraduate at Sain't Mary's, and have regularly volunteered as a youth literary tutor at 826 Valencia.

My mission

Better Futures Equal Nurtured, Curous Minds

My Story

I'm from a migrant farmworker community in San Bernardino, CA. I remember teaching my friends' parents enough rudimentary English so they function at the doctor's office or the grocery store without stigma. As I write my own novels now, I'm humbled by and proud of my hometown, my origins, what it al means and amounts to.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I believe an audience ought to best be tailored to a student's needs. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all pedagogy.

Quite a few of my students felt insecure about revealing their diagnosis until we built trust and rapport, and I could opt and pivot appropriately.
