Our goal is to nurture the spirit of inquiry and play that children naturally bring to everything they do. We provide the space, the tools, and the opportunity for children to use their hands to develop their minds.

Our students learn to read, write, and create in the context of our projects, play, and travels. We learn at our own pace and at the insistence of our curiosity. We encourage the development of self-motivation and self-discipline, and watch our students grow with every game they invent and nail they hammer.

We learn to write while making posters, composing songs, and drafting the invitations to our performances. We learn to count, add, and subtract while selling lemonade and cookies at a stand at the farmers market. We learn to divide so we can see if there are enough snacks for everyone to have seconds (or thirds!) We learn to read in order to decipher important subway signs on our field trips.

What kids will learn

Our mission

Why Brooklyn Apple? Our mission is to provide a home base for homeschool families to meet up with other homeschoolers and create community. We are place to make friendships, make messes (and clean them up), and use tools and equipment that is difficult to own in small NYC apartments. Our HQ has a kitchen, a woodshop, a library, and a big meeting room with a rather large board game collection. We are here for you in Brooklyn since 2011.

Our story

Brooklyn Apple was founded in 2015 by a group of parents and puppeteer and teaching artist who wanted to do more than have their kids sit in chairs all day long. Since then it's grown into a thriving hub for the homeschooling community in NYC.

Brooklyn Apple uses a child-centered approach to education. We believe that kids should have autonomy over their education. The guide is there to lead the group, but we focus on meeting children where they are and giving them agency over their own education.

Brooklyn Apple Academy’s Explorer’s Club is a great fit for children with ADHD. Its hands-on, movement-rich programming is designed to engage curious minds through activities like field trips, journaling, and creative exploration. The environment is flexible, supportive, and intentionally small, making it easier for children to stay focused and feel seen. With an emphasis on real-world learning and self-direction, the club allows kids with ADHD to thrive without the pressure of a traditional classroom setting.

Explorer’s Club at Brooklyn Apple Academy can be a great fit for children on the autism spectrum who enjoy hands-on, real-world learning and benefit from flexible, sensory-rich environments. The program’s small group size, predictable daily rhythm (even amidst changing locations), and focus on exploration and creativity often help autistic children feel safe, engaged, and supported. However, because the camp involves frequent transitions, social interactions, and travel via public transportation, it may be challenging for children who need a very high level of structure, quiet, or consistent sensory input. Communication with staff ahead of time is encouraged to assess individual fit and possible accommodations.

Brooklyn Apple Academy’s Explorer’s Club thoughtfully adapts for children with dyslexia by centering on experiential and oral learning rather than text-heavy worksheets. Through field trips, storytelling, journaling, and hands-on projects, children engage using their strengths—like auditory processing, creativity, and movement—while avoiding unnecessary reading frustration. In this supportive environment, students with dyslexia are empowered to learn and shine on their own terms.

Children with sensory processing challenges often thrive at BAA because of all the outdoor play. If a student has pronounced sensory processing challenges, the loud, boisterous environment can be overwhelming so we suggest you have a conversation with us to see which program can best meet your child's needs.

Explorer’s Club offers an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere for a range of learning differences, particularly for kids who do well with movement, variety, and creative expression. Its experiential model allows children to engage in ways that suit their strengths rather than being boxed into one style of learning. That said, the program’s urban exploration format—traveling on public transportation, navigating sensory-rich environments, and adapting to daily changes—may not suit all children with physical, emotional, or behavioral support needs. Families are encouraged to reach out directly to discuss whether the program can support their child effectively.

Gifted children often thrive in Explorer’s Club due to its open-ended approach, intellectual freedom, and opportunities to ask big questions, pursue deep interests, and learn outside the traditional classroom. Activities like geocaching, orienteering, and museum visits offer rich stimulation and real-world problem-solving. The program’s flexible, exploratory nature allows gifted kids to follow their curiosity and engage with material at their own level. However, gifted learners who require a highly academic, accelerated pace or are uncomfortable with unstructured settings may need additional support to feel fully challenged.
