My approach to teaching is fun, engaging, interactive learning. I like the outside of the box approach, because all students are not the same. I like to teach lessons where kids are not lectured to, but feel like they have a say in how they learn. I like to get to know my students, so I can include their own interests in our learning experience. We could play games, make up a song, go on a mission, or even create whole worlds of our own.
I have a Bachelors Degree in English and Creative Writing from The University of Tampa. I have also trained and worked with tutoring companies such as MindRise and Amplify, where I was trained to work on reading and writing with elementary aged children during their extra help time in school.
I have been tutoring since I was in high school, tutoring my peers. In college, I tutored my peers, as well as elementary grade students in math, reading and writing. I have also tutored students in high school, in the subjects of math and social studies. Since graduating college, I have always had a student or two to tutor, until I got part time tutoring gigs with companies like MindRise, Amplify, and TutorMeEducation. I have many, many years of tutoring experience and love engaging with children, who make learning fun!
My mission
My mission is to help children flourish and grow a love for learning! I don't want students to feel overwhelmed or anxious about learning, so my mission is to make it fun for them. Life is about learning, in whatever you are doing, and I want them to see the wonders in daily life. My inspiration is seeing these kiddos bloom, light up, and become their own life learners!
My Story
I grew up on Long Island, NY, surrounded by beaches, lakes, and hiking trails, but still close enough to take advantage of the culture of NYC. I spent my childhood outdoors, hiking and fishing with my dad, climbing trees and riding bikes. I almost always had a book on hand. My love of learning started there, in the outdoors. My dad could name all the trees, flowers, animals-- he knew it all! Being able to see the magic of nature first hand, and reading of the magical lands in my books, really helped mold me into the person I am today. My obsession with reading then led me to want to create my own worlds, so I began writing. Starting in 5th grade, I filled notebooks and notebooks with poetry and short stories. I have since journeyed to Florida, North Carolina, and most recently, West Virginia. Wherever I have lived, I have found solace in nature, books, and learning. I homeschool my 10 year old daughter, who has also developed a love for learning from anywhere and in any situation. She loves being in nature and wants to be a zoologist when she grows up. We spend A LOT of time learning about animals and creating stories around them. Crafting and nature time is how we spend a lot of our days.
Cognitive Diversity
How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.I do have some experience with children with ADHD. I figure out what they are interested in and incorporate that into our lessons. I do not lecture, we engage. We will go over a fact or two, and then apply it with a game. Then, we will build from there, with another tidbit or two, and then hands-on interaction.
